That Great State of Weber

Postby Cane from the Bend » Fri Sep 04, 2015 10:30 pm

hmm...

Oregon St is having a tough time figuring this team out. Just when the Beavers look as though they have the game firmly in hand, Weber comes back and brings the score within 6...

OSU leads 13-7 going into the 4th ... but Weber has the ball.

This is why you do not schedule non-division teams.

Well, the first play of the 4th quarter was a poor attempt to throw the ball away, OSU interception, and really started moving the ball.
The Beavers got as far as the 10 before stalling out, and settle for a field goal. 16-7

Speaking of untimely miss throws ... Western Michigan turn what was looking like a route, into what looked as though there would be a tremendous mounted comeback.

Had Sparty not intercepted that pass in the end zone, we were 1 onside kick away from a potential shocker.

Western Michigan showed a lot of heart tonight. Too bad they didn't get things going for them sooner. The Broncos could be a major player in the MAC this season.

That ought'a just about do it.

Too many mistakes down the back end here ... Weber put up a decent fight, but with OSU's last touchdown here, this game just got out of reach. 10 minutes left, the score OSU 23, Weber 7

Sadly, I think people are going to look at that score and not think much of the Beavers. They have a QB who can run outside the pocket and we seemed to miss tackles left and right yesterday. I'd say next week is going to be an unsightly dogfight

Western did play well. MSU people will panic about the D, but it's not going to be a problem. They're going to beat Oregon. Eric's lock of Week 2 (Utah over Michigan was my Week 1 lock :( ). Western will be a bowl team, but I'm still partial to Northern Illinois in the MAC West. The East will be a free-for-all. I think Kent State could be this year's sleeper in the MAC with a solid defense. Bowling Green and Ohio should still probably be favored in the division. I had some hope for Ball State to rebound because I still think Pete Lembo is a great coach and that last year's record was an aberration, but you can't give up 36 points to VMI. Goodness, that's awful.

Charlotte beat Georgia State to win their first ever FBS game too. I don't know if that says more about Charlotte or about Georgia State. They're each probably terrible. GSU needs some work in recruiting. I think they have the right coach, but I don't know if he can survive long enough to bring in better guys and see it pay off. The Sun Belt will be some fun this year because I think Lafayette, Arkansas State, Appalachian State, and Georgia Southern are all going to be in the mix for the conference title.

There isn't much to think about Oregon State, and rarely has been. How did Mike Riley's resume make anyone at Nebraska think he was worthy of that hire?

Riley runs a squared away, no nonsense program. I suspect college presidents are becoming concern responsibility for what is happening with athletic programs is coming closer to them. They can not stay the abdication of their duties much longer. Pearlman, the university chancellor who knew Bo had to go, was involved. He said, "Remember our roles here," Perlman said. "The athletic director hires football coaches. "I would not make a judgment on a football coach. I wanted to make sure he was a good citizen and he understood the values of the university."

I understand Bo had to go, but that has nothing to do with hiring a replacement at a university whose football program is a historical juggernaut and wants to return to prominence. Riley was a major surprise hire in Lincoln.

Bo had to go and the hiring, though a complete surprise had everything to do with Riley's hiring. Personally not sure why he took the job and not sure he will do well there with wins and losses, but that may not have been the basis of the hire.
