From January 2015:

Eric wrote:The SEC West got huge props for going 5-0 against their biggest non-conference games (literally only 5 big non-conference games). Then they lose five big non-conference games in the bowls, and then the sky is falling. The bottom line is that these are pretty limited sample sizes, so crowning them as the greatest division of all time was premature before you saw them compete against more than five decent teams. I would still give the SEC West the nod as the "best division currently in football", but the gulf was exaggerated grossly. Just as I wouldn't fawn over them after five wins, I'm not going to dump on them after five losses.

But I just have an axe to grind. Disregard. :D

I appreciated that it brought some balance to the conversation, but people were going overboard in saying how overrated they were. Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and Bama still had very good teams who all deserved their "New Year's Six" slots.

Last year, Ole Miss and Miss State just did not do very well in their bowl games...not that they were bad teams, but when you are rated #1 in the season at one point and get beaten 42-3, it gets folks attention. And Miss. State losing by multiple TD's to Georgia Tech also garnered attention.

Just like this year's Big Ten division champs...had good years but got slaughtered in the bowls.

With scattered intersectional big game match ups during the season, the bowls are what people remember about those matches.

Ole Miss looks good going into next year...pity that FSU will open with them.

I still do. Which is why I've had a crappy New Year's thus far.

I don't have anything against the individual schools or some of their fans. I don't like some of the fans who gloat, the media, and then how it feeds into some of the player's egos. And just because I'm a college football fan with one certain disposition doesn't mean I can't be even-handed when talking about college football at-large. If I cheer against the SEC, it's entirely because of the media and because of the fact that I like upsets.

Oh we all hate ESpiN and the SEC.....and the fact that this marriage creates a self fulfilling prophecy. Elite kids in the south want to play for the SEC...who can blame them since they are constantly bombarded with ESPN telling them that this is "THE" league.
