I Just Heard An Interesting Playoff Idea ...

Postby Cane from the Bend » Tue Jun 28, 2022 5:42 pm

-------------------------------------------------------------

I've not exactly been a supporter of the Playoff that we have, no secret ...

However; and I hate to admit that this came from a notre dame guy, I was watching a Live Stream discussing the general landscape of College Football, and this guy brought up an plausible alternative to what we have, while keep the playoff.

Hold the playoff until Post Bowl.

Rank the teams accordingly pre-Bowl, affording for more teams to have a shot, in the post season, by reranking them after the Bowl Games.

That way, you could have a team say, "Hey, we can with this game, and get our opportunity."

Then, of course, you have the teams who know they aren't going to make the playoff, but still have the chance to knock someone else hopes out of the picture.

It would reestablish the importance of the Bowl Games, for those who aren't going to go further. All the while, making it very much more important to those sitting on the cusp of getting in.

C'mon now! Why hadn't we thought of this, in all of our debating it over the years?

Sounds similar to what the NCAA currently does with basketball, baseball and other sports…… one big ole playoff. 8)

………. it’s probably wise to not discount those Notre Dame guys, seems I recall the Irish were the first to sign a deal with the TV guys.

Almost ...

The playoff would still be 4 teams. The difference, is how many teams would be able to play for it at the end. The assumed front runners would have to prove it by winning their Bowl Game, first. Then we'd get the contrived subjective process, with a smaller field of teams to choose from.

In this format, you'd have the same number of 16 games, as the proposed 12 team playoff would give us.

Personally, I'd like a clause that states you still need to win your conference affiliation, first.

And; since the ACC is moving away from the 2 Division design, maybe force ND to compete in a CCG to be eligible.

That way, they could maintain their quasi-independent status, all-the-while requiring them to accumulate that heavily pontificated 13th data point.

That last part I included myself.

But it could give the Power5 a negotiation leverage with the home of the dome.
