Gilbert Named Starting QB for Horns

Postby Yeofoot » Mon Aug 29, 2011 1:42 pm

Just like with Chrissy Simms, it was Gilbert's position the entire time. It didn't matter how good Case played or how poorly Gilbert played. Apparently Mack is willing to bet his job on Gilbert.

We'll see if the running game can take some of the pressure off him.

How is the oline looking? Is there experience and depth comIng back?

I agree with one item. If the Horns don't have a good year Brown is in trouble and will in turn replaces Dodds the AD.
The preceding statements are solely the opinion of GoBoilers and are, therefore, probably not based whatsoever on fact, research or more time in thought than what was required to physically type them. They're probably correct anyway, so you shouldn't argue too much, because otherwise he'll just blather on forever. On the internet Al Gore invented.

The O-Line is supposed to be solid. They lost a good player last year, Tray Allen, that likely would have started all year. He arriaved with high expectations, but never really fullfilled them. He's spent all camp doing well to neutralize Jackson Jeffcoat. So, if Jeffcoat is the stud he's supposed to be, then Tray is going to be a stud this year.

Apparently Dominic Espinosa, a redshirt freshman has stepped up enough at center, that the line has been able to shift players around the their more natural position.

In short, I think that the Texas O-Line is good enough to not hurt them, but not great enough to make things easy for Gilbert.

Well; I hope for the Horns' sake, Brown will know when to pull the plug on the Gilbert fuse.
I'd sure hate to be standing anywhere near that explosion, when that bomb blows up in his face.

We `Canes fans know your pain all too well.

First Berlin, then Wright, then an indecision between Maurve & Harris, to Shannon keeping Harris as the Starter even though he threw more interceptions than TD's being the root cause of most of losses for two consecutive seasons.

Some teams cannot get by on an unbalanced offense. Without having both a passing threat, as well as a rushing attack, Miami has been deficient.

Last year, that was also the case for Texas.

Coaches tend to forget too flippin' easily, with regards to the previous season.
They watch the development of these qb's in the spring & summer, and for some
reason, assume they have gotten that much better. Either that, or assume, due
to the ability to outshine their back up from last year, in preseason practice, it
will result in better game play during the actual season.

They seem to forget how bad these guys are with real competition pressure, as
opposed to just practice time.

If Mack doesn't gamble on someone else, in the event Gilbert's production is low; you could be in for a rough season.

Maybe Gilbert has improved; the again, maybe Mack has misplaced his faith.

Gilbert is the weak link for the Horns..

He must do better than the 59% completion rate and the 10 TD's vs 17 INT's that were his stats last year. I guess Case McCoy didn't show them enough in two a days but he looked better in the spring game than Gilbert.

I'd put money down that Case will be the starter before the season is out.

I agree Billybud. McCoy probably ends the season as the starter. With Gilbert, I think they'll start off the year 3-1 (UCLA or BYU will beat them).

Texas quarterback redshirt freshman Connor Wood announced on Wednesday that he will transfer to Colorado.

The decision came shortly after Garrett Gilbert was named the Longhorns' starter on Monday.
Wood was tied for third on this week's depth chart with David Ash and behind Case McCoy.

Connor Wood: "I want to thank coach Brown, coach Harsin, all of the coaches, and my teammates for the opportunity to play at a great school like the University of Texas. I loved playing for UT and gave it my all, but I felt I needed to seek a new opportunity. I will always cherish the memories and friends I developed as a Longhorn, but I'm excited about the next chapter in my life and looking forward to playing at the University of Colorado."

Wood was given his unconditional release from his scholarship.

Mack Brown: "We appreciate everything Connor has brought to our program. He is a tremendous young man and is a great teammate and student. We hate to see him leave, but at the same time we understand his desire to play. We hope for nothing but the best for him and look forward to following his career at Colorado."

It really is a hard sell to convince a kid that being recruited as a backup, with the unlikelihood of achieving the starting position, is a good deal for him.

I just hope for his sake, the move to Colorado wont be something he looks back on with regret . . . yet, them Buffaloes need a decent field leader behind center.

What is absolutely scary...If GG was a year or two ahead of Colt, he wouldn't have played either.

Just like Snead, I will follow Wood's career and root for him.
