My Top 15 List . . .

Postby Cane from the Bend » Sat Aug 27, 2011 7:28 pm

At the risk of being hypocritical; unlike most years, I feel there were a sufficient number of teams last season who not only showcased a significant improvement --- but also, separated themselves noticeably from the rest of the country, all while setting a solid foundation to build from, for the future.

That being noted; I will stipulate my list by virtue of wins. In esse, lose a game you're name no longer appears on this list. That is, until said team wins enough competitions to elevate themselves into worthy position, and all other programs which may replace such school, have also lost there way off of this list.

This is a top 15 list. I feel to do a 25 ranking poll would be arbitrary as, right now, the talent pool & separation of teams, seems to meld right around 12 or 13.

As well; many of these teams could just as easily be swapped in position without falling from the list. Presently, this is who I feel belongs ranked.

With that, here is my current top 15:

1.) Florida State
2.) Stanford
3.) Oklahoma
4.) Arkansas
5.) Alabama
6.) Oregon
7.) Wisconsin
8.) Virginia Tech
9.) Boise State
10.) Iowa
11.) South Carolina
12.) Notre Dame / USF
13.) Texas / Nebraska
14.) TCU
15.) West Virginia

I believe it is justifiable to double up some of the rankings at the moment; seeing as several of these teams will be playing each other, and so, things will all settle themselves with time.

Especially with regards to #12, as Notre Dame & FSU play one another in their season opener. The simple solution is; the winner is ranked 12, the loser is no longer viable.

The season is about to start, folks :D

We're inside a week :!: and the anticipation is about to start boiling over.

I hope you are right, seeing my Hogs at #4 and Hawks at #10. Usually both Iowa and Arkansas start the season not in the top 20.

The only thing I like better than you putting Arkansas at #4 is that you put Arkansas above Bama.

The week 4 game: Ark vs Bama should be a great game. I don't think people realize how improved Ark's defense is going to be. They are big, strong, and fast all over the defensive front. They will dominate lots of teams at the line of scrimmage. Maybe not dominate Bama or LSU but they will be able to hold their own and have a chance to win those games. And the Hogs have tons of depth on the defensive front. The linebackers, safeties, and corners will be more than good and will put up their best numbers since Petrino arrived in Fayetteville: due to experience and great line play.

You have FSU waaaay too high...JMHO
If they get by Oklahoma, well then it wouldn't be outlandish. But for now, FSU hasn't done anything.

My basis is on the assumption the `Noles will beat Oklahoma.

At this point in the season; nobody has done anything.

I hate having to quote myself, however, Donovan I refer you to my original posting of this thread:

As I feel, anyone who is ranked in the top 10 should be able to compete with any one of their peers on the same list.

I personally did not have Georgia ranked, nor would they have been if I had a top 25 poll, which I do not.

Yes, Boise looked very impressive in their victory, as did others.

It is not a slight against the Broncos, just, I expected the game to go the way that it did.

Note: LSU did not make my prior poll, when everyone else did have them on. They beat a team I had ranked above Boise St, and still are ranked lower @ #11 on my poll . . . below Boise St.

Based on your own rankings, would you say that LSU's victory over Oregon was more impressive than Boise's win over Georgia?

Even Baylor looked good against TCU. Though, I doubt the Bears will look that good all season. Just a hunch, and yet, I could be wrong . . . Still, I had TCU ranked at #14 in week one; they are no longer on my list. And Baylor did not make my poll for week two. Did I slight the bears for beating a team I had ranked? Should I have ranked them above Boise, because I saw TCU as being better than Georgia? Do you have Boise ranked higher than Baylor on your poll? Did you assume TCU was a better team than Georgia?

Outside of Baylor, I still feel the season is too young to say who has played so well they surprised anyone.

You may be taking my opinion a little too personally.

Boise did well against a not too good Georgia...but Georgia is still a better team then most teams have beaten so far.

When you have your own poll you get to call the shots. I agree that the people on this board tend to be reasonable and fair. I think our fan poll people and even yours here represent a fair assessment of how the teams have looked so far.

A team ranking above another team whom they beat is subjective. The farther removed from the head to head competition the less it is important. The truth lies in that any team can beat any other team on a given day. The odds of it happening may be .0001 but there is always a possibility. That is why they play the games, and what makes it fun for us to try to guess what is going to happen.

There are no wrong answers, only varying opinions.

Here's two points of contention where I vary from most people. I'm not sold on Auburn or LSU. Auburn struggled in their first game. They then beat a well respected Miss St. by making a last second stop in their red zone. You have to give them street cred for that win but how much? I gave them some but I'm not ready to believe this is 2010 revisited. LSU on the other hand has put up two relatively good performances but I sense part of it is patented Les Miles Skulduggery. The strength of those wins suggest they are possibly the team to beat but my personal bias towards LSU and their trend of unpredictability leaves me skeptical of putting any faith in them.
