I am trying to figure out what Gary Patterson means by this. I have read this quote roughly a dozen times and my brain is rendering "does not compute" as an answer. He's referring to LSU's players voting on reinstating Jeremy Hill:

"I'm sure if it was some opponent they'd beat by 100 points [the players] wouldn't have a vote."

I have no idea what this means. Opponent as in....A player? A team? Voting on what? How would their vote effect the other team? They're voting about a player on their own team. Maybe the meaning is obvious here but I have no freaking clue It probably doesn't help that ESPN isn't giving the full context of the quote, but nobody else in the comments seems to have any issue comprehending what he means from this simple, isolated sentence.

Gary Patterson is an excellent coach. Have no idea what he meant.

But, of all the teams in college football, I believe Texas Christian University football team and fans are the worst sportsman, bar none. I have seen them play, in person, multiple times against different opponent and the fans. Besides being rude, abusive, crude, obscene, surly, vulgar, impolite, uncivil, churlish,impudent, impertinent, graceless, gross, loutish, scurrilous, unrefined, uncouth and brusque, they are proud of it.

Having said that, since when do teams vote on discipline of other members.

The problem may be in the form of translation by espn.

We are not hearing the quoted statement ourselves, therefore, it very well could be the espn grapevine which distorts the original context.

Thus: "I'm sure if it was some opponent they'd beat by 100 points [the players] wouldn't have a vote."

Could actually be: "I'm sure if it was some opponent they'd beat by 100 points wouldn't have a vote."

In which case he is saying that, "Sure, they are allowing their direct friends and peers to have a vote. But, what if it were players from the outside of the program voting?"

Could also be: "I'm sure if it was some opponent they'd beat by 100 points wouldn't've vote."

Which could be translated as either;
a.) "Sure they voted for their own guy. But what if they were voting on someone they don't have any respect for?"
b.) "Sure, it was up to the players when it was there own guy. But would we let them vote on people outside of their program?"

So, whatever he meant; I'm just going to assume espn did not convey the message as it was actually stated (seeing as it was espn who added [the players] to this quote, interpreting in a way they choose {or as they want us to see it}).

Sounds like many Wisconsin fans. Some Buckeye fans too, unfortunately.

Well, apparently Patterson is repudiating the media's version:

TCU coach Gary Patterson sent LSU coach Les Miles a transcript of his Tuesday post-practice comments to show that national media outlets took a report in the Star-Telegram out of context.

Patterson’s comments regarding TCU defensive end Devonte Fields’ two-game suspension, which were in response to a direct question about Fields’ chance of playing in the Horned Frogs’ Aug. 31 opener against LSU at AT&T Stadium, were taken incorrectly by multiple media outlets, Patterson said.

Some, including a legion of LSU fans, inaccurately misconstrued Patterson’s comments as a commentary on Miles’ handling of star running back Jeremy Hill, who was reinstated to the team earlier this week after receiving an extension of two years’ probation for his role in a bar room fight in the spring. The story was regurgitated and dots were connected that weren’t there, creating a pseudo-drama pitting Patterson versus Miles.

Gary Patterson: “I know what I said. I didn’t mention Jeremy Hill. I didn’t mention Les Miles. It was more about Devonte Fields. If they want to make something up so they can get all fired up… I can get the same thing when I go home. Everyone can stand in line.”

Patterson tried to make light of the situation and said he and Miles are good friends. The coaches share an agent, who helped Patterson forward the transcript to LSU.

Patterson:“I've no intention at all of spiting anybody or making anybody look bad. I’m not Babe Ruth. I don’t point at fences. Most of the time I play below the water. Anybody who knows me knows that’s way outside of character, so why would I do it now? Why would I call up the Tiger? They don’t need any more help.”

He lamented that LSU is stocked with potential NFL stars at linebacker “and I’m trying to find one.”

Patterson joked that at least now everyone in Louisiana knows where TCU and Fort Worth are located.

Patterson: "Baylor, Tech and Texas people have all chimed in because why not. But it really doesn’t bother us or me that much. To be honest with you, I take it as a compliment.”

I think Patterson may have been the number 1 want for head coach of the Razorbacks, but he was not about to leave for the SEC. Probably a smart move on his part.
