I Hate Picking C-USA

Postby Eric » Sun Oct 05, 2014 12:48 am

This is a bit of a side note to all of the great action we had today, but C-USA is just a giant mad scramble. Is there any consistency whatsoever? Here you have a team in UTEP that, while justifiably an underdog on the road against Louisiana Tech, played Texas Tech close and beat both New Mexico and New Mexico State. La Tech demolished North Texas and UL Lafayette but is coming off of a loss to Northwestern State. Vegas had LT as 12 point favorites, but that means almost nothing in C-USA. UTEP has a good running game in what should keep this a competitive game. What happens? UTEP loses 55-3. Something must have happened behind closed doors, like the players and coaches had a falling out or something because that is absolutely inexcusable.

Second insane outcome of the day was UAB, coming off of a deflating loss to Florida International (!!!) the week before, comes out and beats Western Kentucky, another Jekyll and Hyde team. Speaking of FIU, they stomped Florida Atlantic, the same FAU team that played Wyoming to a draw, beat UTSA by scoring 40+, and destroyed Tulsa 50-21. FIU is somehow 2-0 in C-USA play against obviously better opponents, all this after losing to Bethune-Cookman for the second straight season. FIU's defense has improved rapidly and they look okay and the switch at QB has helped their offense, but there is no way this team should have managed wins over both FAU and UAB. Impossible.

UTSA looked promising after making Houston look like a SWAC team in the opening week, but UTSA has since dropped four consecutive games, dropping a home date against New Mexico (and of course, UTSA pushed Arizona to the brink, you know that team that just beat Oregon at Autzen Stadium last Thursday?).

I've had it, I tell you  . I'm mostly upset that I picked a team that lost 55-3 to win outright on the pick'em this week

UTSA looks like they have quit. The starting QB was pulled yesterday, I think they have lost all of their confidence and there is no leadership in the locker room. (David Morgan being out didn't help, he was their "go to" in the clutch.)

Marshall has impressed me but they Middle Tenn is the only respectable team in their schedule, they can finish their regular season without anyone having a clue as to how good they might be.

Yeah it doesn't help that C-USA has been watered down. But on the same token, it's apparent that the teams that dumped them for the AAC are actually worse than their replacements. Tulane, Tulsa, SMU, and Houston are very, very bad football teams and we all saw what FAU did to Tulsa, UTSA did to Houston, and North Texas did to SMU. ECU is the only halfway decent team that joined this past year.

Western Kentucky could give Marshall a challenge, depending on which team shows up to play. And C-USA West is so weak, I don't know if they could challenge. Possibly Louisiana Tech on a good day.

ECU has really impressed me this year. I would have liked to have seen the AAC and C-USA as on larger conference. Quantity may not replace quality...but it sure helps get quality into a championship game.
