Week 14 Rivalry Week Opinions

Boise State v. Utah State – Utah State’s defense was just not there during the first quarter. The Aggies have won 9 games this year, but last night did not make you a believer. The star is the very under rated Ajayi, a junior. He rushed for over 200 yards and according to the commentators has carried the ball more than any other player in Div I this year, (I am not big on name changes.) The scrap the committee is throwing to the insignificant 5 conferences should be rebuked by every team involved.

Florida State v. Florida- Sometimes there are things in our lives that are more important than commenting on a game. Congratulations to FSU for their season. I think Florida made a mistake firing Muschamp. He was building in the right way, it takes time with programs that have deteriorated.

Marshall v. Western Kentucky-When you believe, you go for two~!

Stanford v. UCLA-The Bruins have a couple of the best players in football, Hundley and Kendricks. Their losses have been to their Oregon and Stanford means they are irrelevant, again.

Ohio State v. Michigan-This game was more of a soap opera, the game was just the background. Missing player Karageorge, hurt quarterback Barrett, Coach Hoke coming back next year and the contrived rivalry that has lacked a threat for some time. Ohio State should be a top four team. If the committee uses injuries and all the ancillary happenings to “guess” how a team will perform in the final four, they skip the season and get right to the ‘big’ game. Contrived lunacy. And it is also disrespectful to players and coaches. Meyer has been through this before this year and he did well. He alone deserves to move on with his team. The big comment, however, is the advertisement during the game schools have about their institutions. Ohio State’s said, words to the effect, We are a force in the economy of the state and the state’s largest employer.’ I rewound twice to make sure I understood correctly…that is what I thought I heard. WOW, a public school is an economic force and the largest employer of a state and we wonder what is wrong with the country?

Oregon v. Oregon State-I am not sure Riley can survive. He is a great person, good coach and has done a lot of OSU, but your team has to come to play. Mariota’s play speaks for itself but the real threat with Oregon is their defense. Relentless. Defense wins championships.

Georgia v. Georgia Tech-Other than Derek’s apoplexy, it was the most entertaining game I watched. Had a little of everything in it. Was in the trenches football.

Auburn v. Alabama-If I heard the announcer say one more time how great Lane Kiffin is as an offensive co-ordinator. He must have a Public Relations man writing their scripts. I have no opinion about Kiffin, but I thought Sabin ran the show. Auburn ran out of gas. Alabama stopped at Dreamland Bar B Que and got refilled at half-time and it showed midway third quarter. And did the officials just find “simultaneous possession” in the rule book? Two in one game? And did you hear the announcer say, “In the history of mankind, there has never been a higher scoring Iron Bowl game?” Where do they get these guys? History of Mankind?

Missouri v. Arkansas-I was pulling for Doss. I finally believe that Arkansas is turning the corner. I never bought into blaming all the coaches for everything. This is a program that was gutted by a selfish coach and a lot of people built it back, they just didn’t all win games.

Clemson v South Carolina-Time for a well-deserved retirement party.

Notre Dame v. USC-You had to want to watch this game because there were no Hogan Heroes reruns on.

Ole Miss v Missississipi-To those that do not closely follow football, who cares? They are just bigger Boise States.

I absolutely agree. When the places that are supposed to get you prepared for the future are the largest employers -and this includes all public education that is a problem. I have plenty of teacher friends who don't understand that this isn't a good thing. Obviously that is an even bigger problem and this country collapses under its own weight.

I agree with Muschamp. If not for the two missed field goals in the 4th quarter Florida probably beats Florida State.

Yeah, but you could say that about lots if teams that have played Florida State this year. I have two points about Florida State. One, they are defending champs. They are going to get every teams best shot every week. Especially Florida's. Florida isn't very good, but they still have top notch athletes. Florida State has won all of their games for two years. This year getting everyone's best shot every week means they can't have a week where the phone it in. Most any division 1 school especially one from a p5 school has the ability to beat any other team if that team comes out flat.

Two, they keep winning through all the adversity and having that huge spotlight on them. There is a lot if pressure for teams on big winning streaks to win and sometimes just that pressure becomes a big monkey on your back. Ohio State during their national championship run almost lost to bad Cincinnati, Purdue, and Illinois teams, it didn't mean they were a bad team. As a matter of fact that was probably the best defense Ohio State has had since the 50's.

I think you have to give them credit for winning. That is something no one else has matched this year and this is they second year they have done it in a row

They only teams I have in the top four right now are Oregon and Florida State. Past them, I want to see what happens next week.

The thing about Florida State is that I don't think they get enough credit for their schedule. Oklahoma State with J.W. Walsh to open the year at a neutral site is a different kind of game than it would be now against Daxx Garman and with the team mailing it in. So it looks like FSU beat a mediocre 5-7 Big 12 school, but I still think of that as a quality win. Clemson was defeated with their backup QB. Notre Dame has had a load of defensive injuries after the FSU game. They aren't as good as we thought coming into the game, but at this point in the season, it looks like a "bad" win. And I think Boston College (who is rock solid), Florida (not good, but as you said, has athletes and they're still a bowl team), NC State (I have no clue what happened to their defense in that one), Louisville (good win all-around), and Miami (who obviously gave Florida State their best shot, it was a great game) aren't slouches, and it takes a lot to get through that unscathed.

People won't give them credit, but I have a feeling if they played Alabama' schedule, they might have only dropped one game as well. My money is still on FSU in the tournament, and a lot of that has to do with them being disrespected. If you want to say that FSU would have lost once on Bama's schedule, go right ahead, but if that's the case, then at that point it's a draw between Bama and FSU for the one-seed. There's no reason to reflexively rank Bama ahead of FSU like the committee has.

I guess none of you gentlemen watched my favorite rivalry game - UL/UK. Quite an interesting game; and, it turned out to be an error laden shootout won in squeaking fashion by UL 44-40. Everything was out of wack, TV audio went out (so switched on the radio), then the video acted up. Two amateurish TV announcers finally forced me to listen only to the radio which was 1/2 second or so out of sync.

UL acted like they weren't there for the first quarter and UK played hard to be bowl eligible. Even before the start UK players tried to start fights during warmups by crossing to the UL half of the field. Lots of pushing and shoving; and, in general UK continued it's bush league efforts all game.

UK kicked two field goals and got a TD in the first quarter and lead 13-0 which started to make me nervous. 2nd string QB, true freshman Reggie Bonnafon, replacing starter Will Gardner out with a torn ACL, was hesitant and sacked several times despite being the savior of the game at Notre Dame. Bonnafon is injured early in the 2nd quarter and in comes 3rd stringer Klye Bolin a redshirt sophomore who hadn't had much playing time due to injuriesto himself. His first play on 3rd and 7 is a 10 yard pass to get us out of trouble, the 2nd play is a 45 yard touchdown pass down the field to super receiver DeVante Parker who scores. 13-7. Another quick score and we lead 14-13 and it looks like the team has finally gotten off the bus, on the field and is ready to play [first lead change].

They score, 20-14 UK leads [2nd lead change], we score and it is 21-20 UL in the lead at the half [3rd lead change].

A quick 3rd quarter score and UL leads 28-20 Several chances to really open up are missed by UL. A fumble by UL leads to a UK field goal, now 28-23. Another UK drive leads to field goal, now 28-26 Ul still in the lead. Another UL fumble leads to a UK score making it 33-28 UK leading again [4th lead change]. After handing UK a lot of points on miscues, Bolin redeems himself again with another touchdown drive making it UL 34-33 [5th lead change]. UL intercepts the ball and runs within the UK 5 yard line but ends up with a field goal, 37-33 UL with a small lead.

My nerves are shot again when Bolin gives it back to UK when they get a pick six on Bolin, now UK 40 - 37 [6th lead change]. Bolin is playing better than most 3rd stringers and passes UL down the field with a final pass to DeVante Parker for his 3rd TD, now UL 44-40 over UK [7th and final lead change].

About 3:30 to go and UK is driving crisply down the field when Gerrod Hollimn ties the NCAA interception record with his 14th of the year and he returns it to the UK 2 yard line where UL simply runs out the clock to eke out the win.

I watched it. In fact when the last interception happened, I thought I heard you whoop.

Yep, you might have heard me yell; certainly the TV did as it got quiet again. And, I took my 3rd shot of our 3rd best KY product to calm down.

UK fans still talking trash up until I ask them when their last bowl game was. Then I heard several of those, "wait til next year" phrases - sort of a stock phrase for UK football fans. Or the ever present, "wait until basketball".

Glad it's over, Swamp Daddy
