The ACC's new Commissioner has his thoughts...another new sheriff in town. A sheriff in cahoots with the greedy ranch owner.

The ACC's new Commissioner has his thoughts...another new sheriff in town with thoughts.

"An expanded playoff’s impact on player safety, the regular-season and academic calendar, and a bowl system that Phillips believes “is worth saving” all must be examined.

“I think we’ll get to the right place,” Phillips said. “But to me, that’s not gonna happen in a few months or the next six months. I think that’s gonna take some time. We need to do a thorough assessment before making any major decisions.”

Phillips also said that guaranteed "access" for each Power Five conference likely would accompany any playoff expansion.

ACC beat writer David Teel's take:

But what if the playoff expands to eight teams with automatic bids to each Power Five champion and the highest-ranked Group of Five champion? That would leave Notre Dame scrambling for one of two at-large spots.

Notre Dame’s calculation then would become: If entree to a national championship is paramount, do we have better odds of earning the ACC’s automatic bid or an at-large?

An expanded playoff of 12 or 16 teams would create additional at-large slots and erase this potential incentive for the Irish to forgo independence.

Billy's thought...maybe a disincentive for the ACC to want an expansion beyond 8.

One would think, that if Notre Dame's record were in the 11 + win column, they would have just as much of a chance getting into an 8 team tournament, with 6 of the contenders already solidified --- and this is under the presumption that the best Group of 5 team would even be receiving an autobid.

If an anomaly were to occur, where Clemson is steamrolling everyone [par for the course], then loses to North Carolina in the ACC title game, or Ohio State is undefeated in the regular season, however loses to Wisconsin in the Big 10 Championship, that would stress the Irish's chances. You're almost guaranteed 2 teams from the SEC.

Though, most years, the Pac 12 and Big XII won't have two viable entrants.

Honestly, I do not believe the structure to 8 would alter ND's opportunity much, on a normal basis.

A stretch to 16 teams would almost assure the Leprechauns a spot every season; that is, any season they'd win 10 or more games.

I feel like we were just discussing something about participation trophies recently.

Exactly Cane...which is why I think the ACC will not support going beyond an 8 team playofff...

Other than the last Covid year with shortened schedules...no 11 win team that was not a conference champ has ever played in the CFP.

2019...

Notre Dame would not make 8 team playoff...would make 16

2018...

Notre Dame made CFP four team playoff

2017...

Notre Dame would not make an 8 team playoff...would make a 16 team playoff

2016...

Notre Dame would not make 16 team playoff

2015...

Notre Dame would make an 8 team CFP (last place). But would probably not make it if Five P5 Champs are AQ...other P5 programs were higher in the CFP. Michigan State, Ohio State, and Iowa were ranked higher in the CFP.

There is something to be said about facts and numbers; and there they are.

The only thing I'll add, is conjecture, though it might be obvious to us all at this point.

Back when the last conference realignment occurred, there was a bunch of talk about how the Big XII was inevitably going to implode.

Since then, the Big XII has established themselves quite securely, and has become a ratings monster in TV viewership [with the help of FOX]

The Pac-12, on the other hand, has dwindled down to a meager regional bump. They are struggling to get the numbers, and their Pac 12 Network is failing.

Some had praised the Pac for not inking a contract with espn, and going independent with their broadcasting. However, what those people likely are not aware of, is that the Pac-12 was unable to acquire a Broadcast Partner. ESPN, FOX Sports1 and CBS Sports all turned them down, due to their inability to draw.

Getting a new commissioner is putting a band-ade on a on a hole in the dam. The general viewer isn't interested. So, they are going to need to finagle something by political means, to keep the swell from going over the levy.

Their were rumors popping up just within the last two years, of the Pac-12 breaking up. I just don't think getting a team into the College Football Tournament will be enough. Expanding to 16 teams, for the Pac, is the only way they have two representatives. But what even is that worth, if they are both bounced in the first round?

And if a group of 5 team were to advance ahead of the Pac, it could do more harm than good.

For Notre Dame, the implication are a lock. The SEC would undoubtedly have 3, maybe even 4 teams in. The Big 10 & XII would get 2, possibly 3 some years.

So, unless the pollsters manipulate the voting enough, the Pac could find themselves competing for a second spot versus a second Group of 5 team every year.

Clearly expanding the playoff is imminent. I just don't see the benefit of going to 16 for anyone other than the Pac-12 and Group of 5.

16 Teams = 7
Power5 Champions
Notre Dame
Best Group of 5

+

additional, SEC (3)
additional, Big 10 (2)
additional, Big 12 (2)
additional, Pac 12 (1)
additional, G of 5 (1)

It would seem like an anomaly to fall outside of this build.

Fox's rise of late has less to do with the Big 12 than Fox's 2017 acquiring, with ESPN, of the Big Ten rights.....Fox gets first choice weekly and has been broadcasting the Ohio State-Michigan game and Fox also has picked up the Big Ten network...Fox refused to bid on the Big 12 championships game.

Fox always owned the B10 network. That is what started the B1G affiliation with the B10.

FOX's expansion of College Football content over the last few years, has helped the Big XII bolster their market value.
They have given the Pac-12 the same time window, and the Pac has not flourished the way the Big XII has.

The Pac is trying to gimmick their way into a more prominent position. However, the best they can do to garner a
larger viewer base, is to schedule higher profile out of conference games.

They've got a few this season, upcoming --- even still, will this be enough?
