Iowa - v - Penn State

Postby Cane from the Bend » Sat Oct 09, 2021 8:10 pm

What a game :!:

Defense, defense, defense ...

That is how good teams play great.

#3 meets & defeats #4 in a classic Big Ten showdown.

Ferentz has a formula. That formula might get the Hawkeyes to the playoffs; we'll see [they won't win if they get there, though it would be a refreshing change of face].

I don't see anyone keeping them from the B1G championship game.

Both teams played well. Penn St got out to an early lead, but couldn't widen the gap. Iowa is a better second half team than the Nittany Lions are. And as the game went on, Penn State's inability to gain any more points kept Iowa alive.

The Hawkeyes widdled away at the lead, until they claimed it for themselves.

The defense really turned things up, and prevented anything big. They gave just slightly, but took more.

Penn State's offense could get in rhythm on their last two drives. The Hwkeyes' D was too stout, and dominated the 4th quarter like a championship driven team.

The antics after the game are almost as entertaining as the game itself……… seems the Iowa fans took exception to the Penn State players staying down after a play and voiced their displeasure.

Coach Franklin vehemently denied he would have them do such a thing, while Coach Ferentz says, ‘I hope those guys are well, I don’t know what their status is. Nobody wants to see anybody get hurt. But I think probably, the booing, is a reaction to, there were a couple of guys that were down for the count and then were back a play later. Our fans aren’t stupid. They’re watching, they know what’s going on.
I’ve been here 23 years and I think that’s only the second time we’ve seen that kind of stuff going on.’

James Franklin would never try to gain an advantage. He did have a good point though; Iowa really doesn't go fast so what would be the point.

It did seem, at times, Penn State players would suddenly become ailed for a single play, just as Iowa started to function well offensively.

When a guy goes down for several minutes; then out for one play. It makes you wonder; Was the strategy to shut down Iowa as they built a little momentum.

Also, after the game, there were a bunch of Penn State fans decrying Iowa fans, for booing injured players.

Some PSU fans even went so far as to say that the hit which took out QB Sean Clifford, was intentional.

Though, if you go back and watch the play, it is almost hard to see what caused the injury. The hit itself was pretty standard. A blitz tackle just as the ball was thrown. Nothing malicious; head up, midsection take down, no launching.
The hit happens at the 7:59 mark of this link:

………as did Kirk Ferentz when he mentioned players going down and then returning to the game a play or so later.

"Cramps" :lol:

Franklin is all in on gaining every advantage. Last year at Happy Valley there were no fans in the stands and Ohio State still had to use hand signals to snap the ball because you couldn't hear. Maybe the fans at Penn State white outs aren't quite as load as we thought.

Now that’s understandable how those no-huddle and fast paced offensives can “cramp” up a defense, but now we know that a slower paced offense with 5 or 6 big ole corn fed Iowa Farm Boys lining-up and knocking your *** off the line of scrimmage causes “CRAMPS” too……

You want to see a comedy of fake cramps; go find a complete game replay of Tennessee/Ole Miss ...

It was almost painful to sit through that whole thing. 5 hours in, without overtime, because someone was going down with "Cramps" every other down.

The mayhem at the end of the game, with all of the trash thrown onto the field was bad in its own right. But, even that was only adding about 20 minutes to the game length. The game ended close to 12:30 am, where the kickoff time was 7:30 pm.

By then, I wanted to be throwing things, too.

Only for Iowa to blow it against Purdue. I had hopes for them to win the Big 10. I like an underdog.
They’re either going to run the ball here or their going to pass it.

The fewer rules a coach has, the fewer rules there are for players to break.

See, well ya see, the thing is, he should have caught that ball. But the ball is bigger than his hands.
