Well, it could mean TCU was likely pretty good, 1998, because USC only had 4 other losses, on the year to the following teams:
FSU, 10-30 (11-2 overall), California 31-32 (5-6 overall), Oregon 13-17 (8-4 overall), UCLA 17-34 (10-2 overall).
Of those teams, 3 played in bowls, and 2 were in BCS pairings.
(UCLA in the Rose Bowl, FSU in the Fiesta Bowl).
One team USC beat to get to the John Han * Bowl was Notre Dame.
Notre Dame was 10-2 on the year, including a loss to ACC co-champion Georgia Tech, in the Gator Bowl.
USC was likely pretty good, at any rate.
BCS good? No, but then again, neither was TCU.
