This Week For College Footbal Fans

You know?
I was thinking about this;
for college football fans ( true college football fans that is ), this has to be the best week outside of Championship Weekend & Bowl Season.
Labor Day not only sees the first week of College Football kickoff... but, we get an extra dosage, starting Thursday "before" Labor Day, up `til Monday... then, only Tuesday & Wednesday in down time... before Thursday kicks off again...
It's a great time of year... isn't it?

I know Auburn plays Mississippi State and Central Michigan plays Temple. I believe that is correct.

Well, thats a matter of perspective I guess, I am a big college football fan. My favorite team, however, is my alma mater of Akron. Unfortunately we are playing an FCS school in Gardner-Webb this week. Not exactly a great week. In fact, I just was watching the Big Ten Network and they are showing three different games, all of which are Big Ten teams hosting FCS schools in Illinois State, Western Illinois, and South Dakota. Later on, Illinois hosts Southern Illinois. Anybody else think something is wrong with this picture? Can this really be good for CFB?

No, not really. I have never been much in favor of FBS schools playing FCS schools, even though I know there is a monetary gain for the FCS school, but it just seems like an overblown scrimmage. The only thing good about FBS vs FCS is if the FCS school happens to win, ala Ole Miss, Kansas, and currently Minnesota. Other than that...?

Right, we're all fond of the upsets that happen, but for every Jacksonville State over Ole Miss there are 10 40 point blowouts to show for it.

I'm not really in the mood to discuss FCS victories over FBS schools right now.
Gardner-Webb 38 Akron 37 Final/OT... Akron missed FG at end of reg and blocked PAT in OT

It's a sad thing when it happens...
However, if enough FBS programs fall to FCS schools; maybe it'll prompt them to stop scheduling from down there.
Va Tech is screwed... and could seriously damage the credibility of the ACC should they win the conference.
No team who loses to a FCS school should be eligible to play for a BCS bowl at season's end.
Well:
I just hope somebody learned their lesson.

Well, the other end of that is the regime that was in place at the time the game with Gardner-Webb was scheduled did not want to play any FCS schools. They did, however, feel that they owed it to the fans, alumni, local businesses, etc.. to play an additional home game. In part due to so many FBS teams scheduling FCS teams Akron kind of got pigeon-holed into having to play an FCS team if they wanted a home game. Once upon a time Akron could host a North Texas or New Mexico State but apparently no longer.
Once again thanks go out to the NCAA for making wins over FCS teams count toward bowl eligibility! That rule is tearing apart the MAC from a recruiting standpoint now as well. Why go to a school like Akron? Sure, they used to get two or three shots a year against some big names. Now, however, they will get many fewer while decent FCS programs will get just as many shots at big name schools as the MAC schools are getting. And this is while still having a legit chance to win their own national title.
