Why they couldn't give VY his Heisman

I'm biased but...
VY deserved the Heisman in the first place. He spread the ball around too much all season and was an unsellfish teammate. We all saw what he was capable of when he needed to put his team on his shoulders to win.
I've heard so many reasons back and forth on whether to vacate or not, but the only legitimate reason hasn't been brought up.
SLIPPERY SLOPE
Once the precedent is set that if a player is proved ineligible, the runner will receive the Heisman, the accusations will come out of the woodwork. The floodgates would open...
Arkansas extremists would go after Tebow to give McFadden the Heisman...Texas extremists would discredit Bradford for McCoy, some booster would be found by Vols nation to discredit Ingram, etc., etc.
It would've been nice if Texas picked up another Heisman, but for the good of College Football's most prestigious award, this all went down the best way possible.

Mac Brown has whined too often. Vince lost in one of the most lopsided votes ever. I think something like 678 first place to 67. I think the proper decision was made and I am not in the minority on this issue.
The one reason that made sense to me, is that if Bush had been ineligible then his votes would go somewhere. Hard to predict that, but my guess is that without Bush in the Heisman race, Matt Leinhart would have gotten many of the votes that Bush gathered. We all realize the team event side of this. However, there is no way to tell this, as you can't vote all over.
I don't think I have heard anyone think that Young should have been awarded the Heisman other than a few Texas fans and of course Mack Brown.
I also realize that OJ Simpson and Paul Hornung were totally different issues, as their discretion came after their college days, unlike Bush. If however, their awards were removed, I am sure that no one else would replace them.

Did you even read my post before replying? Your response is to a completely different argument than I am making.
My whole point is I AM biased, but I still think things went down correctly.

There have been Texas fans saying it should have been given to Young. You did say early in your post that you had not heard a good reason for not giving it to Young. I just stated one of the reasons the Heisman folks gave and I definitely agree.
I also realize that your last sentence stated you agreed with the decision even though much of the post seem to slant the other way.

2 Things I don't get in all of this (maybe 3)...
1) I absolutely don't understand Vince even wanting the thing if it would be "reissued!"
2) The BS that they couldn't really accurately determine if Vince would have been the one to have one if Bush was ineligible.
(Don't the voters submit 5 names) because if this is the case, then they are full of it!
3) Seriously, why do I get a big whiff of what stinks of, "we didn't see this coming!" It was coming for a the NCAA is stupid but I can't see sliding a couple of hundred grand worth of entitlements around behind their baack.
The NCAA kills me. Best I can make of this is that they basically did squat while others dug up everything until their hand was finally forced! And then I compare this to the treatment of Florida State last year and it really ticks me off!

Vince Young wouldn't except it if it was offered. I don't think anyone would.

He said 2 days ago in an interview...I heard it out of his own mouth...that if the Heisman committee offered it to him he would take it.

The award needs to "take some time off"....it's a joke.

Exactly. I don't remember years ago, the Heisman talk going on until mid-way or later in the season.

The sports reporters and magazines need something to talk about and annoiting a Heisman winner every week creates buzz for them, just like them discussing Boise in the title game. It has only been 2 weeks, I wish they would let the season play out first but then half of these talking heads wouldn't have anything to babble about night after night.

I agree. I just saw a commercial for the College Game Day show for tomorrow morning. Topic one is Heisman front runner and they were showing video of the Michigan QB....come on....he has played in 2 games. Let the season play out. I bet they talk about Ingram's knee for half the show in the morning as well....and will say Heisman trophy winner every time they mention him. I may not even watch Game Day tomorrow.

This just gets crazier as society more and more seeks out flash over substance...
Yes Razor, years ago you only had talk this early when you had a guy in the running from the previous season who then comes out early and impresses against better teams. But, that I can live with as there is some merit then!

I think it is a little out of whack when they start talking about a Freshman after two games.

I stopped viewing the trophy with any virtue after the 2005 Rose Bowl win " Texas over USC ".
Once all the pageantry of the game wrap settled... while the game day crew still had air time; they started mentioning Heisman front runners for the next season.
Bush went pro
Vince went pro
Leinart Graduated
As for college football during the off season; the "who's our next Heisman" talk is all they would jabber about.

Okay, maybe I stopped seeing the legitimacy in the Heisman prior to that night... a couple of years prior... though, that was the night I decided the validity of the trophy was never going to be worth a d@m^ again.
