Sportsmanship? Or point shaving?

Stanford favored by 5 1/2. The game is almost over and Stanford leads 17-13. The Stanford back breaks through at the 30 and tears for the end zone...no one in front of him. He stops at the five, goes down. Stanford takes a knee to end the game.

With a score of 24-13, and only a few seconds left, there is no way that Arizona State could have come back...if that was the thinking on why the big lay down.

I don't think you take a knee while the game is going on. I also find it hard to believe that Harbaugh, knowing his personality would take a knee. Unless the guy running gets hurt, there is no reason not to score - even if you are up by fifty, you finish the play.

I didn't see the end. Yes VERY curious. Stanford then doesn't cover. Raises serious questions.

Stopping in the middle of a play and not trying to score, with no resistance, is very troubling. I wouldn't go as far as to call cheating, but it has nothing to do with sportsmanship. If he was tackled on the two and they took a knee - OK - but to go down with no resistance has to trigger an investigation or a long explaination.

I could be playing my mother, my wife, and my sister and I ain't taking a knee...and I love them! And if I could score 330 points I would, and apologize later.

I don't see anything wrong with taking a knee. What is wrong is not scoring during the play if you can. Once the play is over, then take the knee and run out the clock.

Had Stanford only been leading by 1 point that would be the correct play, but definitely not in this instance.

Just what I am thinking...another conspiracy....the fact that it ended the game and assured a win is irrelevant......and the fact that against UW earlier, Stanford does not take a knee and throws a long bomb which is intercepted...score was 28 zip, Stanford is also irrelevant.

Personally, I thought it was pretty lame. But football ceased to being played on the field long ago....we worry more about spreadsheets and databases than blood, sweat, cold hot dogs and hot soda.

If your in lane stadium and the score is getting out of hand, you'll see a back up quarterback and I've seen Va Tech take a knee deep in the opponents territory to run out clock rather than tack on more score. Thats sportsmanship, respect for the opponent and respect for the game.

I can understand not wanting the other team to get the ball back but I find it hard pressed that a player looking into the end zone pulls up and stops on his own. If he had the discipline to know that him stopping ends the game and ensures the win good for him. It's like INT's in the end zone. How many times have you seen kids run them out?

This is Stanford..generally speaking these students are disciplined and have a modicum of intellect.

In Florida...the ramifications of a "flop" live on after almost 40 years. Us Gator Haters are sensitive to such shenanigans, I guess...

I wouldn't give a team 12 minutes...but 16 or so seconds? It is rare tio see a player on the way to a TD, just go down on the five. And the team then line up and take a knee to end the game.
