Iowa football team falling apart

Well the rumors are that as many as 11 Iowa players will be suspended for the upcoming bowl game due to failing a drug test (the is all over Iowa message boards and twitter feeds...so it could be bogus).

What we know for sure:
1. last week WR Derrell Johnson-Koulianos was arrested on drug charges
2. RB Jewel Hampton has left the team
3. RB Adam Robinson has been suspended by the team
4. the team announced last week that RB Brandon Weghe is seeking a transfer

So...in the bowl game against Missouri, Iowa will be without it's top 3 running backs. The article below says that true freshman RB Marcus Coker will probably get the start.

Now if the rumors are true that up to 11 more players will be suspended from the bowl game then Iowa has a real mess on their hands.

Razorhawk...what have you heard about this story?

DJK was rooming with another student who was dealing drugs and got involved with it. He is a Senior and has been in the Ferentz dog house most of the year, and in spite of that, became the all-time leading pass receiver in Iowa history.

Jewel Hampton has been injured and not played for some weeks and will probably transfer.

Adam Robinson has been out the last two games with a concussion and had some problems attending class. May return next year.

Brandon Wegher has not played all year and will be transferring.

Press conference Tuesday at 10AM. I think the other stuff may be just internet rumors, but we will know tomorrow.

One thing, Kirk Ferentz will not hesitate to suspend or remove someone from the team if warranted.

That is the good thing about Ferentz, he doesn't put up with that kind of crap.

As the game gets bigger and more lucrative and the pressures mount I wouldn't be surprised to see more of this showing up on more teams. This may explain partly Iowa's slide to 7-5 after an early run.

Boilers, not sure what you are talking about seeing more of this. The only real new news was concerning Darrell Johnson-Koulianos and his involvement with drugs.

Adam Robinson suffered a concussion, but apparently was not attending classes as Ferentz thought he should be.

Jewell Hampton has been rehabbing an injury and has decided to not come back to football.

Brandon Wegher is probably transferring to South Dakota and has not been on the team all year.

The only real story involves, 1 player DJK, a senior with only a bowl game left of eligibility and he won't be playing. His roommate, was dealing drugs and he got involved. His off campus roommate was not an athlete.

All that happened was due to internet rumors, nothing else. On the Iowa Rivals board some idiot made a post that Kirk Ferentz was resigning. Most intelligent people realized this to simply be a troll. Another on a Missouri board (Iowa's bowl opponent) made a post that Herky the Iowa mascot was arrested at 2AM in the morning for public intoxication. People saw this and actually thought it to be real, but it was just someone doing some creative writing.

People read stuff on the internet and just assume it is true. Kind of like the junk that people get tricked into sending to everyone in their address book about a virus. These same people will site that it has been confirmed by Snopes, but if they actually checked on Snopes, it would be confirmed that it is false and simply a hoax.

There was a story in our paper today - the columbus dispatch - that said something was wrong with the drug testing the university was using and students knew how to get around it. I don't know if any of it is true or what impact it has, just that we are starting to see some piling on when it comes to this story. I hope that is the end of it. I like Kirk Ferentz, I think he is a good coach and a guy who plays it straight up. I hate to see crap some kids did hurt him.

Kids figuring a way around the drug testing. I can't imagine there is a school where they HAVEN'T figured that out. If there is it would have to be a bunch of dumb students. Much of the press conference by Ferentz and Barta (AD) was talking about the drug testing procedures that they have been using since 1988.

I am not naive enough to think pot smoking is probably about as common as alcohol consumption on college campuses. And this surely carries over to athletic teams.

I agree. I'm not making a big deal about it, just commenting about how it hurts the coach indirectly. It gives ammunition to the people who are against the coach. As long as it doesn't move past were it is now, he should be alright. The problem is once that snowball starts rolling downhill it picks up momentum. IMO it would be a bad thing for Iowa to lose Kirk Ferentz over this or anything else.

Ferentz isn't going anywhere. He probably runs a tighter ship than almost any other current college coach. What is disturbing is radio shows taking the internet gossip and then spreading this gossip. The internet with players on Facebook and Twitter really make the job a much more difficult process for coaches today.

I agree, the instant news really makes it tough. A rumor flies in the morning and it gets "reported" for several hours in a day, then gets retracted later for being wrong. The retraction is one sentence and not widely corrected and boom - it is out there.

I know from several instances of things happening at Ohio State, that the story and the actual truth are often different things.

Razor, my command of the King's english is lacking. What I was opining on "may see more of this" is alluding to my guess that there are a lot of kids on many teams have this problem. They just haven't been caught.

Stuff "like this" has been going on for probably as long as kids have been in college. The internet, and particularly message boards, have a way of spreading false rumors and blowing things way out of proportion.

I partially agree but, we are talking about illegal drugs versus alcohol-the one that is still legal and one of choice. I am sure the illegal ones have always been part of the drug scene but, I don't know what heroin or coke looks like! I would surmise those drugs have slowly grown at the collegiate level. Yes, you are correct that the internet makes look even a bigger problem.
