It doesn't seem that the schools feel the NCAA doesn't have any teeth. It is time the schools step up and quit cheating. All of them.

Incentives to cheat...

Example....If you are a coach in the SEC and payed millions to win in this competitive league, and don't...you lose your job. A few game changing players are worth almost any risk.

It isn't just the SEC, there are lots more schools on the list of major violations. Coaches may have an incentive to cheat, but the presidents need to take charge. They can stop it if they want to stop it.

There seems to be validity on several levels. There are cheaters, both institutions and individuals. The premeditate and cheat. Then there are the wingers...just sloppy...do not pay much attentions but just end up breaking rules. Then there is the class of violators that may, in fact, have no idea, be the majority. Those where the rules and regulations are so complex and confusing that it is impossible to think anyone can get it right. Do we think that 50% of schools cheat intentionally? Why does it take a full time compliance office on a campus to moderate all of this?

How about just one rule. In the words of our buddy, Hippocrates, "Do no harm."

...texting during a dead period is one thing...or working kids some extra hours a week at practices.

...paying recruits, or providing them with cars to come to your school is another thing.

There are levels. We know that. The problem I see has to do with all institutional type cheating. I think compliance offices work to keep students in compliance, but I think they mostly assume the coaches to either be honest, or something the university looks the other way on. That is the stuff that needs cleaned up. You will always have kids doing stuff that is against the rules. It isn't right, but you can't stop it. Unless the NFL puts a stop to it, you will always have agents involved with kids. I don't think you can blame the schools for that stuff, unless the schools were enabling it. What the schools can control is cheating by their employees. They can make it known that cheating is a 100% cause for being dismissed.

University of Arkansas was on the list twice:

2003: Some football players took a part time job in the off season at a car lot if I remember correctly.

2007: I am pretty sure this was with the track program....one assistant coach breaking the rules (he was fired).

I think most of our teams are on the list. Ohio State was on for Basketball during O'brien. Obie gave a player $6000 to go fly to the Ukraine (or some eastern block country) for a funeral. The player never went to Ohio State because the NCAA said he wasn't eligible (because he played pro ball in Europe. Obie said that he knew that the player wasn't going to be eligible and therefore had quit recruiting him, but was just helping the kid out. Which is a load of crap because he was actively appealing to the NCAA to make the player eligible. Ohio State deserved the punishment, probably should have been punished worse because they had two school employees cheating. The school did fire them, but not until well after these things occured. The school needs to watch the program better.

OK..it is from NPR..just suck it up...sometimes even the enemy gets it right. I do not think athletes should be paid, other than a living allowance. But the NCAA is a smoked filled room good ol' boy's club.

Keady for basketball got his wrist slapped for an assistant coach Frank Kendrick violating some rules. I don't even remember what he did but, it was willful and at the same time I believe"humanitarian" helping one of the players plus a few other "minor" transgressions. Kendrick was let go, Keady lost a couple of scholarships for a year and other minor sanctions.

Thus, Purdue also shares NCAA spotlight. Now the football team has been so inept the past 30 years save a few seasons no one cares if we have violations.

You are correct Razorhawk. The 2003 one just blows my mind. A small handful of players were paid a few hundred dollars for actual work in the off season. I still don't understand why these guys can not get jobs in the off season. I guess they are afraid someone would be willing to pay them way more than a job is worth to get them to come to a particular school. If that is the case then set a limit on the amount that can be made.

The track one was a clear violation. A track assistant was contacting recruits when he was not suppose to, etc. When found out the University immediately turned over all info to the NCAA and fired the coach. I believe the UofA was stripped of a couple of titles as well.

Gives me a certain pride that VT is not on the list. Hope they continue to stay off the list as well.
