Here is the story:
http://content.usatoday.com/communities ... s-fired-/1

Article said last year Arizona started 7-1 and was ranked in top 15. They have since lost 10 straight games vs FBS opponents.

Stoops record at Arizona 41-50. However, he led Arizona to 3 consecutive bowl games....only the second time in school history.

Just how does firing Stoops mid season and finding a coach in the after season make it better for their program? These athletic directors are more out of control than the NCAA.

If you have ever watched this younger Stoops on the sidelines, it makes you wonder how he kept his job that long. He acts like a raving idiot many times.

Not many teams would be happy with a 1-5 start and many people start calling for heads to roll. The Philadelphia Eagles are in the same boat at 1-4. Everyone is calling for heads to roll but the heads they are calling for have been doing their part. The players have just not been executing. When your at a -10 turnover ratio in 5 games your not going to win many. They've had 14 turnovers in their last 4 games. Hence, the 4 game skid. You can coach ball control until your blue in the face but you can't hold the ball for them.

I have never particularly like Stoops coaching. But firing him and then getting a coach after the season is an AD just flexing his muscles. What coach with experience is going to want to have him for a boss?

Yeah, may be extra things involved but we may never know. I'm leaning towards boosters pressuring for his removal. He had a tough run of games against some of the best competition but I'm sure the lost to winless Oregon St. is what got him canned.

I had a crazy thought this morning that Arizona would hire Jim Tressel.

You see coaches get mad all the time but Stoops took it to a whole other level. He is often out of control. I was still shocked they fired him mid-season. If the season is lost then let the coach go down with the sinking ship. Especially since the ad said they would not hire a replacement until after the season. Maybe there is more to the story of why he was let go mid-season.

Yup, I would guess there is more to it. Firing a guy mid season otherwise is well.... unclassy.

I'd have to lean to some extracurricular reasons to his firing as well. It isn't like they couldn't have been pondering the poor performance after last season's end. And yes he acts like a fool on the sidelines.

But what I wish I had insight to is if his behavior towards referees and calls were worse of late. (That could point to a fire being lit under his seat!) His ejection communique seems powerfully endorsing to those around the program. That always makes me lean to personal issues a bit...but surely says you felt you deserved the axe. Of course, of late, I wouldn't be surprised to hear of the NCAA investigating them. Last season was awful bad, recruiting could have been a bit "turbo-charged", shall we say through the off-season. He may have paid for a kid to super size his #4 value meal during a visit, or something similarly malicious!

Yeah, personal issues alone will not normally get a football coach fired. Mike Price was 0-0 went fired from Bama, and George O'Leary had the same 0-0 record at ND.

On the other side, Barry Switzer never got axed at OU.

I rest my case.

Well, can't say what the situation may have been with Price --- in O`Leary's case; nd was so desparate to hurry up and hire someone, they jumped the gun, picking up O`Leary, then reading his resume`. That's when they found out he falsified his information.

This was more to due with an idiot for an AD, who hired a guy before the HR department could check out his credentials.

Price got caught in a strip joint in the panhandle of Florida. I think there may have been a dispute and possibly also a bama credit card being used for the dancers. This was before he had even coached a down at Alabama. I think he would have done a better job than Dubose or Shula, but we will never know.

And in the end, Sports Illustrated had to pay him an undisclosed amount of money. The Alabama suit was dropped, and that may have been negotiated. He was not bright to party...but apparently the hooker, credit card etc was bogus. And they wanted a Southerner....
