I like schools being able to offer multiple year scholarships. Most kids don't know that they are signing a one year option to the school contract currently. It is a rule that will change recruiting.

The are also going to allow some spending money...looks like two grand a year...not extravagant. couple hundred a month..buy toiletries and pizza...and allow kids that have 0 family support to go to school...Long overdue.

I agree. Much needed for sure. They say it will stop kids taking money. It won't, but that doesn't matter. It is still needed - for the ones who play by the rules.

Won't that rule hurt the smaller schools though? From what I can tell, different conferences can accept or reject the $2000 additional scholarship. Plus, what is that going to do to sport expansion? I've been following lacrosse expansion heavily (I'm a huge fan of college lax), and I'm afraid this will turn off schools from adding sports. This two-grand ordeal applies to all student athletes and not just football.

It should apply to all students. It may hurt some schools. I don't think it will hurt smaller schools as much as you think.

Let me tick everyone off! To athletes outside of football and basketball, they shouldn't get the money. They are at college learning for life (allegedly.) Well Eco 101.1, if you choose to do something that doesn't have much in market value...the reward had better be the love of doing it! Nice doin' bidna witcha! You've cost us enough already!

And this won't solve the money taking problem but I applaud this! Why, because it is getting to the problem (at least a big one) and not chasing some resultant. Additionally, when a kid does take money, the reason is now much more clear! He is greedy, throw the book at him! Again, Nice doin' bidna witcha! You've cost us enough already!

If a school asks a kid to train all year in exchange for an education he should be able to live like any other college kid who has a bad paying job. If the schools would let these kids go work in the off season, then it wouldn't be a big deal, but they can't, If the school decides that sport isn't worth fully funding a scholarship, then let them shut it down.

Nothing solves all problems, most everything causes some. It hurts schools that are not part of big money. However there are so many other things that contribute to the haves and the haves not, eg conference realignment which has been done almost solely for money. Generally speaking this will give students that come from poor backgrounds a chance to go to school on athletic scholarships where in the past, they could not because of the rules against working. And to the schools that are making zillions off the athletes this is not even a blip in their budgets.

College football hands out roughly 18400 scholarships a year. The NCAA report 128k scholarships for student athletes among Div 1 and 2. Roughly 110k scholarships are dished out by 700 Div 1 and 2 institutions yearly that are non-football related. That's about 157 scholarships per school without football or an additional $314,000 dollars per school. We all know there are bell curves so the top institutions will be paying closer to $600,000 more per year and the bottom tier Div 2 colleges with only 1 sport will be paying 14k more per year.

The thing that should be more stressing to programs are the new academic requirements. Several teams are currently not able to meet the new academic demands.

I was a player on a college golf team. I never got a scholarship, but was there for an education. For any college athlete, other than a participant on a revenue producing sport (Football and some places Basketball) to receive any additional money on top of the full scholarship it wrong.

I think if they can't work because of their sport, they should get the money too. My Dad played basketball for OU and his scholarship back then was enough. The problem is that the money didn't go up with the times.

I have no problem limiting a small stipend to footbal and basketball. After all they are the revenue producers. What many forget is these kids can't hold even a partime job off season except for the summer otherwise they are in NCAA violation. They handcuff them! Back the early 1970's you got $15/month "laundry" money, or for some it went for pizza and beer!

Some of it should be able to go for pizza and beer. It is college.

Spence, I have spoken without some knowledge of the facts. I did not know they weren't allowed to work! I have a whole other issue with this! Saying a kid on a tennis, football, or golf scholarship can't work during the season, well I can live with that. Outside of that commitment, saying they can't work starts sounding like indentured service...at least someone under absolute contract. And seeing how this isn't 1543, then absolute service should then have a stipend attached! Because I contract like that has to be whole life supporting. And we have millions who have never worked in this country that have housing, education, medical insurance, and food....and some cash in their pocket.

But the rule should not exist....most of these kids will never go pro, defense exhibit A (the NCAA commercials), and schools encourage other students to work! This is ridiculous, free them to work, or pay them to not...just like the government subsidizes entities to not do something for the "betterment of the whole."

it isn't that they aren't allowed to work, just that with the year round training and the NCAA rules it is next to impossible for them to work. Most students have a job and go to school. Athletes have their sport, their studies, and then they are limited to what kind of job they can have. So while they are technically allowed to work, it is not reality.
