Don't get me wrong, I like Bobby. I like the fact that he is centered and has a wonderful wit, but I also know that he has a ferocious ego.
What's you opinion of Richt?? You had him as an OC for a few years and you've had time to see him as CEO of a team, you've known him longer than me, so what say you?
Richt is a Bowden disciple and does things in a Bowden like way...like Bobby, he wears his faith on his sleeve, and he remains close to the Bowden family. He was a good OC...he used what he had and was blessed during his term with explosive athletes. He did a great job bringing out Charlie Ward's strengths in the no huddle shotgun quick break offense. His fault in his last season at FSU was sometimes being stubborn and continuing too long with something that was not working.
And, he sometimes makes you scratch your head with some calls late in a game that appear to be not thought out...some can cost a game.
As a recruiter, it was hit or miss...kids either responded to his message or they didn't. He is the anti-Dabo...sometimes you may want him to show some more emotion but he isn't a rah-rah type guy.
In the SEC, you have to have the athletes to compete and I think that situation has had Coach Richt gamble and take risks with the "character issue" when recruiting that he would not normally like to take. And Georgia, like many schools, has had to deal with that.
I very much like Coach Richt and his wife Kathryn...With all of the shenanigans going on, Richt is a centered man who knows where he is and what is important. That shared kiss after the Georgia game last year was a rare public display of a private devotion to each other.
Maybe Richt has gotten tougher as a HC, but when here he wasn't "country tough" like a Jimbo or Saban. He liked finesse and scheme but didn't preach blocking. I see a difference in those coming from the Bowden school and those from the Saban school (Jimbo is a Saban disciple). The Sabanites want to hit you in the mouth, crush you. They want people pancaked at the second level. Receivers must put hats on folks or they get pulled. A real physical emphasis on offense.
I know that Jimbo has talked about changing the culture of the team...he inherited the Bowden culture. And in his three years has been on a mission to build a Saban-like team. Bigger on the lines, bigger backs, bigger receivers...and he preaches being more physical than the other guy.
Richt has had to move in Saban's direction...and his recruiting shows that he is intent on competing.....
I liked Coach Richt, I just wanted someone to light a fire under him.....looks like this year he has a fire...
