USC Cheating?

I don't think this story matters a whole lot, especially if nothing was said about the type of ball on the field. After all, if it does make such a difference, wouldn't the players notice how strange it was? Nobody would bring it up or complain? And if the change was subtle but had real effects on the game, it seems like it would help Oregon's passing game as well.
But there is absolutely no way a student manager is going to do this unless they were directed by somebody on USC's staff. There is absolutely no chance. Would they even have the knowledge or frame of reference to think that it would help?
