I took my girls to their first soccer practice yesterday. They seem to like it, I still no nothing about the game. My four year old, who is small for her age plays in the 4-6 age group. The coach told me after practice that when she first came in he thought (Oh no) because she was so small compared to the rest. After he said that he was surprised how tough she is and how co-ordinated she was. (head starts to swell)

The older one (who is not as co-ordinated) did pretty well also. She is starting to develop some eye hand co-ordination, but she has a way to go. I actually wish I could help them. I spent 15 years teaching other people's kids how to play baseball and now my kids what to play a sport that I know nothing at all about.

I doubt it, especially on the skill level that I am watching it in. I am impressed with the coaches. With so many kids they are still working on basic fundamentals. I like coaches who actually try and teach. Some don't know any more about the sport then that kids. If you work on fundamentals everyday, you will get better at what ever you are doing.

If you get ESPNU, you can see the FIFA U-20 World Cup AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL day long.

There's also Fox Soccer Channel and GOLTV if you get those....

Yeah, but I think I would rather watch paint dry.

Tell you what guys and gals ...... I've got 1000 CFP Bucks that says if Spence's and Ms. Spence's girls stick with soccer that Spence will be coaching before they get through high school.

No chance I will coach them in soccer. I am not even remotely qualified and I have no desire to learn. If they want to play ball, I will help them. I have taught two of them how to swim. I will teach them how to play golf. But if you bet that I will ever be a soccer coach, you may as well pay up now. That isn't going to happen. Any game that you can't use your hands, I can't help them with.

I've got a few years to see how it turns out ......... I like my chances.

By the way, have you bought your girls a soccer ball yet?

Actually they all got balls the first day. A local bank donated them. They both seem to like playing. The youngest, I guess, has some talent.

She did show me something after she came home. She said she needed to go out and practice and work hard so that she can be good. Then she went out and practice her drills until she had to come in with no proding from anyone. I like that.

That's the right stuff, Spence ...... the parts one cannot be taught are what make players as opposed to participants.

I figure I'm preaching to the choir though, huh?

Yeah, hopefully she will feel the same towards the end as she does now. That is when we'll know.
