North Dakota State Should be FBS

Postby Eric » Fri Aug 30, 2013 9:05 pm

I'm watching the NDSU/KSU game, and while I realize Kansas State isn't going to be a BCS team and that they are basically a fringe top 25 team at this point, the Bison are hanging with them with ease. They're probably one of the 60-70 best teams in the country yet they compete in the FCS. I think they're really missing the boat on a potential Boise State-esque program by limiting their recruiting reach. They seem to have a very good system in place and they would own the (in my opinion underrated) upper midwest recruiting zone outside of Wisconsin and Nebraska if they moved to the FBS. I think one of the bigger obstacles is finding a proper home because the Mountain West is a stretch westward (Fargo is on the Minnesota border) and the MAC is a little closer to home but a downgrade in competition. I'm not sure where they would fit in best, but I've always thought that they could get North Dakota or South Dakota State to tag along with them if they moved up a level.

And they averaged over 18K at home last year, which might be the capacity of their dome.

That sounds about right. I know they can seat 4,000 more than Idaho's dome. It beats a lot of non-BCS attendances. I know some teams in the MAC have a perennially low attendance number. Some of that is driven by the weeknight games, but even taking that out, it's pretty low.

Probably their biggest disadvantage is the location. Fargo is in the middle of nowhere, and travel expense to any conference would be costly. No doubt, the ability of their team currently would make them competitive in most leagues. Also, I am not familiar with their other athletic teams.

In the middle of nowhere is so relative. I've been to Texas.
