That Darn Hawaii Bowl

Postby Eric » Mon Dec 24, 2012 11:36 pm

I'm officially done with trying to pick the Hawaii Bowl. I'm 5-6 since I started picking and four of those losses have been pretty sizable upsets (ECU over Boise, SMU over Nevada, Tulsa over Hawaii, SMU over Fresno State). From now on, I'm only giving the Hawaii Bowl my one point pick, and I will not waver no matter the matchups

I mean, look at this. SMU was 6-6 in a mediocre conference, lost to Rice and Tulane, and ranked 93rd in total offense and 64th in total defense. Fresno State was 9-3 with losses to Oregon, Tulsa, and Boise State, finished 9-3, and ranked 14th in total offense and 19th in total defense. But somehow you're supposed to pick an SMU blowout. I don't know why the college football gods expect this of us

Maybe picking C-USA is the smart thing to do. They've had a lot of success in this particular game. Maybe they're more motivated by the prospects of playing in Hawaii than teams who regularly visit there to play football? Who the heck knows.

Man, that was horrendous. SMU's offense didn't even do a whole lot. I think Margus Hunt won the 2012 Hawaii Bowl by completely blowing up Fresno State's offense. That is a major faceplant for a team that was primed to do some major damage in 2013. I don't think they realize now how important this game was. Their toughest games in 2013 were against Rutgers, Nevada, and either Utah State or San Jose State depending on how they rebound from their respective coaching changes. They were a prime candidate for a BCS berth if they had a good record, but now the red flags and the skepticism about them is going to be sky-high in the preseason, thwarting any preseason BCS buster talk.

WOW!!!! This is the first game that I'm aware of that no one made the right call or that everyone picked the same team.
