You never really have an empty house with a lab...

My lab, Bogart, is like a perpetual three year old. He is a joy and I will miss him horribly when it is his time (he will be 12 at next birthday). But right now, he is still fairly frisky. I never thought that I would love a dog beyond reason. If I ever have another dog, it will be a lab.

My mom has a lab mix right now (basically a big loveable mut). She is an old dog (the lab, not my mom). Anyway, the dog was barely able to get around and my mom took her to the vet. The vet said give her an ibuprofen every morning with her food. The dog runs around like she is a puppy again. It will defininetely sadden my mom when her dog passes. My dad has been gone for 13 years now and she has not remarried....the dog is her companion. The dog curls up on the recliner and watches tv with her every night. Billybud is right...your house is never really empty when you have a lab around.

My dog died when I was 12. Sam, a beagle, best dog in the world. Witnessed by several to have ran rabbits on two legs, his front ones. He had been hit by a car (back legs) I don't know how he got hit...he looked both ways before he crossed the street and didn't dilly dally. I still suspect some rednecks hit him on purpose.

What a great dog! And I've never had another. There is only a slim difference in a family member and a dog dying. And I actively thought of their short years and decided I'd spare myself 5 to 7 painful losses. We have had cats, and I lost 3 kittens and their momma when I moved to my moms (darn dogs or coyotes). And they were young including momma, I rescued her from a fox just 6 months earlier as a kitten! And that really bothered me, because I failed to protect them. And a cat is more independent and harder to develop a real deep relationship with. And being military we move a lot. I got a feeling we'll get a dog when the kids are gone. Then when the dog passes I don't have to cry for the dog and then cry for the kids crying for the dog also!

I'm not married, but that would be tough for me. I think I'd like to keep "the guys" and the wife separated

Eric, you didn't have to tell us you weren't married. It is just one of those things you just know!
