Remebering 9-11

Postby Dossenator » Tue Sep 11, 2012 12:30 pm

I know this is for football talk but don't think you guys will mind me posting this here. I am not sure how many people check the other forum topics.

A coworker of mine in 2001 lost her sister on 9-11. Her sister was a flight attendant for American Airlines and on the first plane that struck the towers. They just identified some of her sisters remains last week. 11 years later they are still sifting through debris and identifying remains. That is a sobering thought. For many families this is very much a fresh wound. We need to educate our children about the events of that day and pray they never forget. They must realize the importance of freedom and that it comes at a very high price sometimes. We need to remember the individuals who lost their lives, the families who lost fathers, mothers, grandparents, siblings, and remember the first responders who courageously did their jobs knowing that they may not survive themselves.

Think about this: seniors in high school right now were only 6 years old when the tragedy occurred, and children in 6th grade or below were not alive in 2001. My brother-in-law teaches high school US history, and says the kids moan and complain when he starts talking about WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam, etc. They say that happened so long ago, why do we need to know that stuff? We don't even know anyone who was alive during the World Wars. He does his best to share about his grand father who was a Japanese prisoner of war in WWII, and to really tell about the human experience. The old adage goes: those that forget history are doomed to repeat it. I hope teachers all across America are as diligent as my brother-in-law.

I was not alive for WWII but I carry the stories of my grandfather's, great uncles, my wife's grandfather's (was a Japanese prisoner of war in the Philippines), grandmothers, great aunts, etc that were a part of it (over seas and here at home). I often get very emotional when talking about the subject. I hope I can pass on these important stories, and some how impart their importance and meaning to my daughter. These stories and events are not just information to be studied in preparation for a history exam. They should be a constant reminder about those who sacrificed everything for freedom.

Thank you to all the veterans who frequent this message board. Today, and everyday, I thank you for your service to your country.

Thanks Doss for that post. We all need reminders sometimes.

I had a great uncle who fought in WWII. I knew him pretty well when I was younger. It wasn't until he passed away that I found out about his service...or his sacrifice. He was a staff seargeant in the army based in the Phillipines. He fought the Japanese when they invaded, defended the Bataan perimiter, and somehow survived the "Death March" and 4 years in a Japanese POW camp. He never talked about this and It upset me that I didn't know and he didn't share this with me. Now that I'm older, I understand why he didn't and couldn't.

My nephew is leaving for bootcamp this coming Sunday. He will be the third generation of Marines in my direct family. My father served in the Marines and so did I. I'm very proud of him. My brother, his father, is well set up and my nephew could have went and done a lot of different things, but he chose this. We had a little going away party for him this last weekend, but I am still going to go see him Friday before he leaves to give him that last pep talk about boot camp and...well, just to let him know how proud I am of him.

I want to echo Doss. Share your stories with your kids. Your personal stories if you served, or those of family members passed down if you didn't. It's important they know. More so now than ever.

Thanks again Doss.

Thanks Doss and to Grayghost and your Nephew and Family SEMPER FI ! I spent 12+ years in THE CORPS and was in Desert Shield/Storm. My grand-father on my dad's side was in the Army in Korea and lost most of his company on one of the hills there. Unfortunately I never got to hear the whole story before he past on as he hardly ever talked about it, as for 9-11, I was awake for the first 12-15 hours straight as I had just gotten home from work here in Hawaii when the first news report were hitting the airwaves with a female reporter saying it appears an airplane has hit one of the twin-towers. Then my wife's fear because our daughter was going to be in a meeting in the Sears Tower that morning, so I remember that day quite well. I add my thanks as well to those who HAVE, ARE, AND WILL SERVE in which ever branch, THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS!! SEMPER FIDELIS, ALWAYS FAITHFUL!!

They’re either going to run the ball here or their going to pass it.

The fewer rules a coach has, the fewer rules there are for players to break.

See, well ya see, the thing is, he should have caught that ball. But the ball is bigger than his hands.

I think the 9-11 story is an easy one for young ones who weren't old enough or even born. The video says about all you need to know.

The story I wish I could more readily get across is the Cold War, what it was like to live under that threat and what it felt like the day the Berlin Wall came down. My dad has pictures of the wall from when he was there with the Army and I'd love to have my kids at his house one night when I remember that (especially if The History Channel was running a story on it, my dad and I watch THC a good deal.) I find this odd really, as long as there are nukes and Russia or China is still there I will never feel the Cold War is over, it might have warmed but, to me, it isn't over.

*During The Storm I was at McGuire AFB in New Jersey. Working on C-141b's, we went from 6 days of 12 hours to 7 days and a few extra hours here and there often times. That was the only thing that changed for us, other than the since of urgency and importance. I had it pretty good compared to most.

*I was a student at UTSA the day the war came home, 9-11. It was surreal and it was a deep shade of black and blue, lack a huge funeral mass. Abound was the "how could this happen" face and the utterance. I was riddled with anger...then and still!
