I express my sympathies to his family. Thank you for letting us know. This board is in many ways like a close knit family, that have never met in person but we seem to feel each others joys and pain. Howdy was an integral part of our discussions. He did in fact have the role as the Patriarch. He will be missed, but never forgotten. One of his friends, Donovan

Husker, when I saw you on the board this morning I just had that feeling you were going to have bad news for us. I remember Howdy from the old board. He was one of the original posters. He never had a bad word for anyone, not even when he had a reason. I understand he was a long time volunteer with legion ball and he gave many years of his life in service to that brand of baseball. I had several conversations with him on that very subject. If I remember right, he was retired from the railroad and a lifetime season ticket holder to Husker football. He was also an excellent pickem game participate and, even though I never met him in person, my friend. He shared the same disease and the same fate as my dad. I was hoping he would beat that terrible disease. Unfortunately it is indiscriminate in who it attacks and many good people suffer at it's hand. Howdy was a valued contributor to this board. He will be sorely missed. I hope you know that while we have never met grandpa howdy (as he used to refer to himself) he had an impact on this board and on me. I wish to send my condolences to you and your family. I hope you know that we all thought Howdy was a first class human being and a first rate football man. The pain will eventually lighten, but the memories will always be with you. Howdy will live forever in our memories.

Sorry to hear this news, I didn't know Howdy but I did enjoy his posts and stealing his picks for my confidence pool. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I am coming to this news late; my heart is heavy @ this moment.

Howdy will be forever apart of this board. In thoughts, in spirit. As Spence said, Howdy was one of the original members from the first board on Sparklit. I feel very fortunate to have known him. Always the level head, keeping us young bucks in line, though, let us rant at each other without a negative word when differences arose.

My first interaction with Howdy was exchanged in a similar way.

There were several posting on that board looking to gauge in aggressive banter. I was partaking in one of those back and forth flames with two individuals at the time, and Howdy happened to comment on a post I made.

Because of the others, I immediately jumped on him with tunnel vision, only to have him reply with. "I'm sorry if I have offended you in some way. I was merely asking what you meant by BCS Grand Slam because I was unfamiliar with the term. Now I understand, thank you."

I responded as soon as I could with an apology ( which is rare for me on-line ), explaining to him my reason for lashing the way I did. He understood, and we became friends there after.

I'll always remember that of him, because, although I still get into heated back & forths with others, it was my initial exchange with Grandpa Howdy where I toned down my way of interacting with everyone. And I tried to show him my appreciation for it with politeness at ever opportunity I got; even when I didn't agree with his take. I was able to read it with a soft eye, and respect for who was typing it.

Good-Bye Grandpa Howdy, you will forever be missed . . .
I will always keep you in mind each time the Huskers take the field.

SO SAD!! We will miss him.
They’re either going to run the ball here or their going to pass it.

The fewer rules a coach has, the fewer rules there are for players to break.

See, well ya see, the thing is, he should have caught that ball. But the ball is bigger than his hands.

I have not been to the board for awhile, but as soon as I saw the special posting from Husker1, I knew it was bad news about Howdy. He seemed to be a special individual, blessed with the grace and wisdom of his years. The simple fact he was a regular on this board showed his love of interaction with younger guys and his devotion to his 'Huskers.

I will miss his presence and I am certain I will think of him fondly when I first see Nebraska play football this fall.

I offer my condolences to his family. Howdy, you will be missed.

I just read this today. What awful news. It's hard to believe that next fall would have been 7 years since I'd been discussing football with him. Howdy was by far and away the most well liked and respected on this board. He will be greatly missed.

I have never been so saddened at being gone so long! My sympathies to Howdy's family and a salute to his memory. I am so very glad to see his picture, to see that solace, wisdom, and joy framed in his face, one that portrays the voice we all came to know and love. Rest in tranquil peace my friend.

Condolences to the family. I haven't really had Internet service this summer so my time on the board has been few and far between. I just stumbled across this news and I'm really sorry to hear it. We'll all miss Howdy, and he was an excellent picker!
