Too much pro football on Sundays.
Georgia, instead of trying to score a TD and win the game in overtime, intentionally sets up a kicker that had missed 12 time previously this year, with a 42 yard field goal to win the game. If they continue to play, they might score a touchdown, or get a much closer field goal attempt. One might argue, they took away a chance for a fumble. However, they brought in a chance for a blocked or missed field goal.
Stanford, same deal at the end of the game. They were moving the ball easily down the field and failed to use any of their three timeouts, to set up a field goal. You know the rest. The FRESHMAN kicker had already missed once during the game.
Okla St, had the ball on the 1/2 yard line with a first down and instead of punching it in, took a 5 yard loss to put the ball in the center of the field. Why not QB sneak or anything. This kicker did make the short chip shot, but only by about 3 feet from the right upright.
In the pros this strategy is often used, and most of the time I disagree with it also, however, you have to factor in that most of the times they have a great kicker.
I think this is just a situation of Over-coaching.

I think most of the time it is the smart thing to do, but I don't like it either. I want them to try and get the TD. Especially 1st. and goal inside the five.

It may be smart, if you have an NFL kicker or your running backs tend to fumble a lot. Okie St did it last night on 1st and goal 18 inches from the goal line.

I agree that if I am the coach I try and punch it in, but a fumble is a good possiblitity down there because the opposing team are all trying to force a fumble. No matter what the coach does, if it fails it will be second guessed.

A sack can take you out of FG range....and the Spartans had been living in Georgia's backfield..
