This is a good site on W.W. Hayes life and legacy. Most people outside the B-10 only remember the old man losing it at Clemson. While that man was part of who he was, of course, it wasn't all he was. This site shows the Woody we knew.

Re: The guy we knew....
Like so many of us, a single act can define in the minds of many who we are. Seldom is that true. The Knights, Hayes, Paterno's, Bryants, can well remembered for the good they did, and not for human frailties they may have possesed.

Yeah, Woody was the guy the nation knew. He was just so much more. Some of the temper was an act for public consumption. Bobby Knight was the same. He got it from Woody. As he got older he got worse. Then came the bowl game against Clemson and it sealed the public perception of him. He never wanted people know the humanitarian side or the side of the man who did his best to make sure his kids got their degrees and later careers. I'm sure he didn't want to be remembered as the guy who lost it on a football field and punched a player, but he probably wanted to be remembered as a guy who could have. That was who he wanted people to think he was.
