`I read that. There is notthing wrong with a coach putting his mark on the program. Adding there own traditions is actually a tradition of coaches in CFB. The problem comes when you don't embrace the traditions already in place. Most traditions of a school seem silly to other schools, but theirs are OK. The bad thing about Kiffin is that he didn't bring his own traditions in - he brought Pete Carroll's traditions in. He must not have an original bone in his body.

Everyone should just know that I have seen many skeezy people do "well!" They are manipulators who use a variety of ploys to get good an qualified people around them, let them do all of the real work, and hide behind that wall. Some make it 20+ years doing this. But, as I think , Spence hints to, this ain't real easy in a College Head Coaching position. The more these types move the harder is to find them out fully...but Kiffin can't really move up now!

Kiffin and his photogenic wife will be the celebrity couple of college football out in La La land. With world class recruits at his fingertips and a great staff, I expect him to succeed.
We'll see the young Kiffin on the sidelines with Snoop Dog and other celebs as he mixes and mingles with his true peers.

I agree with Billybud on this one. Being in the spotlight is what sustains programs....USC is a school with as much money available as any....they want the attention and of course winning is Kiffin's job...they will have all kinds of help to take care of the rest. He will have an agent to schedule his daily itinerary. I think he knows football and will have the soldiers to make it happen. This is the part of the equation you do not hear much about. Sure he jumped to go there...but obviously USC wanted him...they could have their pick of many head coaches.......why him? He fits their mold...They have had a great run with Mr. Nice Guy Carroll...sincerely....and now....lets change the programing...

Re: Kiffin is really what I heard he was...
Change was the thing they ultimetely did not want if you believe Kiffen was their first choice (Kiffen, Orgeron, and Chow all coached under Carroll at USC). Did you hear Kiffen give his press conference....aside from looking like a duck out of water (the job is completely over his head)....all he could talk about was Pete Carroll. If he succeeds it will be because of others and not because of himself. Donovan....many of the Southern Cal sports writers (whose only jobs are to cover the Trojans) said that Kiffen was their 4th or 5th candidate....they believe the reason many of the coaches turned them down was due to possible NCAA sanctions. Of course stuff like that does not bother Kiffen (he committed 6 violations in just 1 year at Tenn). We will see in less than a month what punishment USC will get....I believe that is when the NCAA committee will meet. Arkansas a couple of years ago was EXTREMELY close to hiring Lane Kiffen...if not for Petrino coming before the NFL season was over it might have happened. Boy am I glad that did not happen. Kiffen and Orgeron showed what kind of people they are when they were exiting the program. I do not fault them for trying to get recruits to come with them....but I do fault them in how they did it. They showed me they are classless....and Kiffen has all ready proven he is a clown. I agree with you Spence that a coach can and should bring in new traditions and make the program his own. But you don't abandone traditions that have been in place for 100 years. A part of me hopes the NCAA comes down hard on USC...and just maybe Kiffen would learn a lesson from that (probably not though).

Of course they did not want change....but they certainly did not do an in depth search. Easy for sports writers to make up anything. Why would the Coaches lie when they said they have not been approached.
Kiffin may well be a clown. But who he is was not secret to USC and they wanted him...even if he was there 110th choice.
I do not think that he will serve them well, but obviously they do. I think he will succeed because of the reasons stated.
As for Arkansas...I know nothing about that program other than what I read for the several posters on this board. My impression there is a program where the tail wags the dog. Hopefully Petrino will correct that, certainly thinks he has the character to do so.
College football has changed. Loyalty is not in the books anymore. I do not think we are better for it.

Petrino s changing the culture at Arkansas. I also agree with what you say about Kiffen. I just heard on ESPN than Norm Chow is staying at UCLA and will not go to USC.

The problem with a guy like Lane Kiffin is no matter how much talent you have, you have to be able to manage it. To keep everyone on the team happy. This, along with recruiting was Pete Carroll's talent. He was great at keeping rows and rows of 4 and 5 star depth happy and not transfering out - for the most part - which is amazing in today's CFB. I think Lane Kiffin is a little to full of himself to play that game. It causes chemistry problems on a team and dissention. It is the reason someone like the NY Yankee's do not win the World Series every year. Pete Carroll was a master of it and I know of no other program that was even close to them in that regard. Urban Meyer is trying to build that sort of thing in Florida, but we will see if he gets there.

I to had heard that Del Rio, was first then Reilly from Oregon St. Normally when these searches and offers happen, it is done in such a way that if the coach is approached and not interested, then the verbiage is that there was never an offer. It protects the coach and also saves face of the school. No one lies, but they just don't disclose the total truth. This happens all the time. Oftentimes it is done through an agent, so when a coach says that he was never contacted, he technically wasn't, but his agent was.
I think Lane is an immature liar, but he will probably do just fine at USC. I laughed when he was trying to answer the question about Oregeron contacting recruits and telling them to not go to class. He nervously looked back and forth from left to right, like a 14 yr old that had just be caught stealing.

Razorhawk...I laughed too. Today, Kiffen said on Cowherd that he did things and said things that he was not proud of at Tenn but he felt those things were necessary to bring attention to the Tenn football program. What kind of logic is that....if I am the biggest clown then I will get more attention? The Southern Cal media is putting the heat on Kiffen and crew and some are not very happy with this hire...along with lots of the fans. They were all hoping for Norm Chow and now that has fallen through. Who will be Kiffen's Urban Meyer in the Pac-10....Neuheisal, Harbaugh,....

He felt the need to reinvent himself because everyone in the world except maybe his family thinks he is a jerk.

I am just assuming his dad, at least, thinks he is OK - he keeps cleaning up after him everywhere he goes.

(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dbNBd4S8II)....this is funny. The media in Tenn fighting before Kiffen gives his statement.
