Re: Petrine back to Louisville as head coach
Little side story if this actually happens. Michael Dyer was a 5 star running back in Arkansas and was being recruited by basically everyone. Dyer snubbed the Razorbacks, bad mouthed the state, and said he would not play for Petrino. Dyer signed with Auburn, transferred to Ark State, and ultimately landed in Louisville. Looks like the coach he did not want may well be his coach after all.

Wouldn't surprise me, people have short memories. The last person I would want to bring in and coach my team would be Petrino if I were Louisville. He has already showed them that he viewed them as a stepping stone not a program.

Re: Petrine back to Louisville as head coach
When Strong left, Petrino immediately came to mind as a potential replacement. He might be at a stage in his career where he is ready to settle down. Louisville is in the ACC now, so that could make a difference. He did leave Louisville for the NFL which is a step up in terms of paygrade, but I don't think any NFL teams will be interested in him again.

Again, though; there is that lingering echo of him saying that he wants to coach somewhere in the SEC, just before he took the Western Kentucky job.

I would be surprised if he stays even if they pay him. It just isn't his MO. I think he would have probably stayed at Arkansas, unless this Texas job came up. Then the oil money would have won the day.

Bingo.
They’re either going to run the ball here or their going to pass it.

Re: Petrine back to Louisville as head coach
Petrino has been allowed redemption way too soon, IMO. If he wouldn't won more games at WKU this past season, maybe he would be good enough for this job at this time.
If he wins more than seven games this year, I would be surprised.
And on an ethical level, I'm disappointed in Louisville athletics. I believe there was a better hire out there than Petrino. If I were AD, I would've offered Kirby Smart(Alabama DC) the job.

I think it is a good hire for Louisville in the short term. I just hope he isn't part of their long term solution.

Just a wonderful hire. Being positive. Rephrasing eliminating sarcasm. I wish him well, as I would anyone. He must be an excellent coach and motivator. As for the past, I assume everyone has that covered.

Re: Petrine back to Louisville as head coach
A 10 million dollar buyout will pretty much keep him there, for as long as the want him. From strictly a football standpoint this is an excellent hire for Louisville. That being said, things will be more difficult for Louisville, moving up from Conf USA/American to the ACC. Not that the ACC is comparable to the SEC, but it will be stiffer competition for Louisville.Cane from the Bend wrote:Again, though; there is that lingering echo of him saying that he wants to coach somewhere in the SEC, just before he took the Western Kentucky job.

Re: Petrino back to Louisville as head coach
Well, the let down continues for me. Strong leaving when he did, and how he did, was so similar to several recent UL coaches leaving that it was depressing for most fans just when the ball was rolling well and we're going in the ACC next year.
I wonder if Teddy Bridgewater leaving for the pros was also part of Strong's decision. I like Strong; but, I felt he wasted most of Teddy Bridgewater's talent as well as that of 4 of the best receivers around.
The let down (for me) continues with the hiring of Petrino. Certainly I've made that plain on several threads on this board. But, not being God or in charge of anything (but myself), I've learned to live with the decisions of others over the years. I have to put some faith in Tom Jurich's choice or there isn't much to believe in.
I do not trust Petrino as a person and only time will ease that. I do trust Petrino as a coach; and, as much as it might not be PC to admit it, I like when someone kicks the butts when they are supposed to and runs up the score (it's certainly been done against us in the past). Strong's style of defense and constantly trying to run (typical old school SEC?) and barely easing past nobodies always bothered me. Only several years will give us here the trend of the way things are going to go.
Reportedly there is a $10,000,000 buyout clause in his contract which will go down over several years to an amount not specified in reports so far. Eventually that will become public. Tom Jurich's post hire press event is available on-line; and he plus others agree that Petrino seems a changed man. Perhaps his ego has shrunk a bit which would be all to the good.
Oh well, we'll see. The cupboard is not bare (as it was when Petrino left) as to talent here. Staff changes not for sure yet; but, I think that a few more will go to Texas with Strong.

Re: Petrine back to Louisville as head coach
I think from a football perspective, Louisville will be fine. They just have to hope that the QB to step up for Bridgewater is competent. Petrino has had a boatload of success over the years and probably would've been fine in the NFL if he hadn't stepped in the minute Vick got busted. I don't think Louisville will set the world on fire right away, but an 8 win season isn't out of the question this year. That would be a great season in a better conference for a team that is trying to repair some of the damage done by defections.

I think it is a good move from a football standpoint, but I don't blame you for not trusting him.

Poor Louisville....I wonder if he had a choice in leaving Ga.
