Wasted Potential ...

Postby Cane from the Bend » Wed Sep 17, 2014 12:12 am

No longer Miami quarter back, Kevin Olsen, has been expelled as a student of the University.

It happened after his latest fiasco, just 6 days away from his first projected field performance at the U, involving a DUI arrest, and having been found with 5 drivers licenses in his possession.

This comes after his having been previously suspended for the first two games of the season (3 games really, two FBS), due officially to breaking team policy (off the record, failure of drug test {marijuana positive}).

He was charged in May 2013 in his hometown of Wayne, New Jersey, with leaving the scene of an accident and failing to report an incident.

Now, after his third suspension by the football program after being charged Monday morning with driving under the influence and having a fake or stolen driver's license, he has been released by the university as a student.

This is just stupid.

These kids just don't believe it when they are given a second chance, that they are not irreplaceable.

5 drivers licenses???? Were they all with his picture??

I remember being in the Navy and having to have a fake ID to get into some bars in town. The good ol days of youthful stupidity.
They’re either going to run the ball here or their going to pass it.

The fewer rules a coach has, the fewer rules there are for players to break.

See, well ya see, the thing is, he should have caught that ball. But the ball is bigger than his hands.

1 was apparently his New Jersey ID (legit)
1 was an ID of him for Florida (legit)

1 was, for some reason, the ID of a Miami defensive player (no answer given as to why he had that in his possession)

2 were apparently fake (probably 1 of him in Jersey, and 1 in Florida.)

Silver Spoons are sometimes more social than economics.

Required reading should be The Theory of the Leisure Class: An Economic Study of Institutions (1899), by Thorstein Veblen.

4 I do not accept all his conclusions, but I find it hard to argue with his observations and the above examples. He specifically used American football as one of his examples. That was in 1899. American football, although its practice could be socially advantageous to the psychological cohesion of the community, it is an economic side-effect, because it is a display of conspicuous leisure.

Yes, though, I was referring to Manziel's otherwise upbringing into a privileged home; not so much the economics of Football.

His social follies started with his, "I can do what I want" attitude, that was already apart of his identity prior to his collegiate experience.

That doesn't just come from peers, rather, starts at home.

I guess some kids have to find out the hard way that with bad acts, come harsh consequences. I would think one incident would be enough to learn a lesson.

Many do get it right off ... those are the cases we rarely here about, because non-repeat offenders make less media tasty topics.

They much rather prefer to drag someone's name through the mud, only to turn around and prop them up when the time for their name comes back to light.

[example: Michael Vick --- who was destroyed by the media, saying he should never be allowed to play again & he should be ostracized forever --- once he got out of jail, the same people acted like they never said those things, stating, the guy served his time, he should be allowed another chance, and blamed the people he was associating himself with as the problem]

Clear as day, these people are not analysts, but teleprompter fed talking heads.

...

Sure we get the orchestral music ensemble played on Gameday, to tell us all about the story of a struggling youth, or family member, whom is fighting a courageous battle against all the world's odds.

But, the sheer number of negative stories outweighs the majority of broadcast time.

The unfortunate truth for these kids who never believe that enough is enough, when it comes to their behavior, may serve then as a wake up call for all of those following in their footsteps.

Boot `em off the team [in which this case, Miami finally did so] --- and let that be the realization to everyone else. You will not get away with it here.

A thing the players in Austin Texas are learning.

You will either be a member of the team who follows the rules; or you will not be a member of this team.

I commend Charlie Strong for his approach. And, if Texas is smart enough to keep him, he will build the program up without all the negative press.
