Heisman Race '06

It is very difficult to win the Heisman without a lot of preseason hype. Who are your top five?

You know what, as soon as I hit submit, I tried to hit stop because I remembered I forgot AP, it was fun watching the Oregon game because it was the first time I ever rooted for him. He is better than Bush, he was just hurt most of the year. Texas tried like crazy to get him to come to Texas, but he defected to the enemy.

I believe I read where Maurice Drew has declared for the NFL draft.

Not for sure, but I believe I saw that somewhere. :?

I liked showing off in front of girls at the beach by catching footballs behind my back, I thought I was cool, THE MAN CAUGHT A BALL BEHIND SOMEONE ELSE'S HEAD!!! I doubt we will ever see a catch like that again, ever. He doesn't need legs.

Why do Heisman winners always seem to come from teams that have at least 9 or 10 wins and are in the top 10 or 15 in the nation? Isn't it possible for the best and/or most valuable player in the nation to play on a mediocre team?

Just once I'd like to see a heisman winner from a school that goes 7-5 or something.

I'm really 50/50 on this thing. Adrian Peterson is the easy choice, but how about Brain Brohm? Now, I can't stand how overrated the Louisville Cardinals were, but I think in 2006 they'll be for real. I have the Cards winning the Big East 2006. Brohm will throw up some huge numbers.

I voted for "how could you forget about ______?" because I thought he needed his name thrown out there. But, I've gotta go with Adrian Peterson. Every dog has his day, and that's why Peterson wins it in his junior year, Brohm will win it in 2007.

Speaking about the "dog day", that was what has been supposed to happen for the last few years. Leinart was supposed to jump to the NFL next year when AD deserved to win the Heisman. Leinart stayed, probably had better stats this season. Reggie Bush was expected to jump to the NFL and Vince Young was supposed to stay, so he'd win it in 2006. Well, didn't really turn out that way. They want for every college great to win a Heisman, and that was the way it was supposed to be. Didn't turn out that way twice. That's just my opinion though.

IMHO, that's all the Heisman has become. Hype.....It's a popularity contest.

Look at the running back from Memphis..I forget his name...His has a NCAA record that not even Bush matched, and I dont ever remember him even being mentioned as a Heisman candidate last year.

Sorry, but's thats my opinion.
They’re either going to run the ball here or their going to pass it.

The fewer rules a coach has, the fewer rules there are for players to break.

See, well ya see, the thing is, he should have caught that ball. But the ball is bigger than his hands.

Yes, but Heisman is more about the pub. Heisman has always been political.

Chris Leek shouldn't be mentioned. He is afraid to get hit.

know... I'm the guilty culprit who mentioned Chris Leak. I know he's a wuss, but if Urban Meyer's offense takes hold down there, then he could put up some great numbers. Therefore, he almost makes it into my top 5.

That is just it. Urban Meyers offense requires the QB to mix it up a little bit. Meyer may have to have the O-line not block so hard during preseason to make that point to him. I hate it when guys don't play hard trying to protect themselves for the NFL. He owes it to his team to play hard and that includes running for 1st. downs sometimes.

They might as well rename the Heisman to "THE ESPY". They have so much pull on what people vote. Everyone had gravitated towards voting for Vince Young for the Heisman, until the Fresno State game. Unlucky for Texas, they had a bye week. Bush had a great game, but all they showed were his good plays. They didn't even mention that the only reason Fresno State stayed in the game was because he fumbled the ball on a kickoff return in the 4th quarter, then on the next return, he got a 15 yard personal foul. Then they hyped up the A&M game as Vince's turn to take back the heisman. Texas' gameplan was to not let Vince get hurt, he was instructed not to run the ball. He had one interception, which was a good pass that the receiver didn't catch and it bounced off his hands and into an Aggies. Vince played very extremely unsellfish that game, just making sure he got the "w" and didn't get hurt. And all ESPN showed was his INT and his very few incompletions. And Bush ran away with it. A team that isn't ranked in the top 10 has no prayer of winning the Heisman, because they don't get highlighted on SportsCenter. It is doubtful whether Notre Dame will ever win it, as long as ABC and ESPN don't get any broadcasting rights, they will not be doing anything to hype them up, because then they lose a lot of money if everyone watches the football game on NBC. How fast did ESPN jump off the USC bandwagon after they lost? All of the ESPN guys projected VY as the #1 pick in the draft. These same guys that a month ago thought it was a joke that Bush wouldn't win the Heisman by a landslide. FoxSports are good, but if you don't live in your teams region, it's worthless.

yeah, that's easy for you to say, going 5-1 the last 6 years. I didn't really pay that much attention to the rivalry, I mainly hated A&M, I didn't know any Sooners, so I didn't talk any trash, but in 2001 I became good friends with our Head Cheerleader and we had a rather fun bet concerning every time the team scored, ahem, anyway, the score ended up being 14-3, and it was pretty pointless sitting there at the end of the game with my shoes and socks off. So pretty much since then, I've heard from her ONCE a year, and you can guess when that would be, after Texas lost, AGAIN to OU. But seriously, with all the politics that go behind the rankings, you have to root for your opponents in the Big 12, it wasn't until you guys beat Oregon that Texas finally started getting respect for being capable of beating SC. It's the same up here in Ohio, the Buck fans actually root for the Wolverines in their bowl games.
