I don't know how, but the Vols need a great coach. Not some dude from an 8-4 lower level school. A big name. I don't know who, but it has to happen. I don't know which names are left. I don't know who would leave their positions. I don't know. Bob Stoops, Brent Venables, Butch Davis, etc.

Tennessee is not a good job, neither is Nebraska. Both have stadiums larger than their recruiting potential and neither are particularly great academic institutions. Both are also beholden to football traditions that few outside of their aging fanbases care much about.

Just never thought I would hear or read that. Ever. Tennessee and Nebraska. Known for big stadiums, loyal fanbases, at least 8-10 win seasons. The occasional conference championship. I guess I never looked at it any other way. I am fairly new to the college football show. However, I never thought I would see the day that Wake Forest, Duke, Baylor (not this season), and whoever else would make it to bowl games, and the Vols or Huskers would not.

I think you're basically correct, Fluiddude, about the Tennessee job, but a great coach could resurrect that place. It's not like the SEC East is setting the world on fire right now. And with respect to Nebraska, I think the Huskers would be amazing with Scott Frost. But I agree there aren't too many available coaches who could make Nebraska great again.

In this age of TV markets and mass media, a place like Nebraska is just going to get lost in the shuffle.

Hey, maybe with these new hires we'll get a UCLA vs. Texas vs. Nebraska vs. Tennessee football playoff.

At least we know where UCLA stands, hiring Chip Kelly.

Tennessee, last I heard, was throwing absurd amounts of money to try wooing Gruden. $10 million a year is just flat out ridiculous. But, if I were Gruden, I'd be packing my bags and moving to Rock Top.

Nebraska is a different animal. They made so many blunders changing in & out their head coach, it's hard to imagine that they even know what they want ... Frost would be an interesting look for them. But he's talking to Florida about their opening ... Personally, I think it all went down hill for Nebraska when they left the Big XII. They saw dollar signs in a Big 10 TV contract, and were promised the world. They got to be in the weaker of the two Conference divisions ... and have fallen flat on their faces. Nebraska simply needs to go back Southwest to revive themselves.

Tennessee and Nebraska are trying so hard to be part of the in-crowd. But like all in-crowds, they don't want outsiders. Who would be left to make bully?

Nebraska wants to return to the glory days, but as Cane explained, they sold their birthright for ESPN pottage and like Thomas Wolfe said, "You Can't Go Home Again."

Tennessee, like most West Coast teams, are legends only in their mind.

Successful schools are seldom about the coach, it is about the program. Well-founded and solid programs can change coaches, have down times, bad coaches and bad luck and come back. Bringing back a program take years, a base and a long-range plane. Coaches now days are given 4 games. (Rightfully so, under the current systems two losses in the first for and you are toast.)
