Seems to me a division was already started, long before Colorado began their kerfuffle.

According to Brent McMurphy:
How committed was Pac-12 to staying together? Following last Tuesday's meeting w/Commish George Kliavkoff, a Pac-12 president contacted a Big 12 president & asked if Big 12 "could take all (9) of us, except for Oregon State & Washington State?" source told @ActionNetworkHQ

As per, Pete Thamel:

Sources: In the next 24 hours, there's two calls for the ACC to vet and have early exploratory discussions on the possible additions of Cal and Stanford. One is for the ACC athletic directors and the other for the league's presidents and chancellors.

Personally, I don't want either of them.

Sure, they are great Academic Universities, and strong AAU Research Institutions. But Athletically, they are poisonous. There is nothing in terms of Market Revenue sharing that offers value. Mainly because, yes, they are in that Bay Area + San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose region. Which is 5th in terms of potential viewer size.

However, nobody watches College Football out there. The ratings do not lie. Fans aren't tuning in.

And the Stanford president was an anchor that sat in the center of a boat that was 3 sizes smaller than the rusted barnacle that Stanford had become. Along with the president at Washington State [the Chair of Pac-12 Presidents], who together, reneged on the revenue sharing format that saw USC/UCLA garnering a larger portion. Which, when the Commissioner negotiated their contract, leveled out an equal revenue share for all members.

Don't be fooled by the media coverage. The Pac-12 presidents ran the conference. The Commissioner was merely a talking head that the member schools told what to say and ask for. Larry Scott & George Kliavkoff had very little to do with the demise of the Pac.

This all started back around 2005/06 when Texas & Oklahoma were looking to exit the Big XII. They were in negotiations with the Pac-10. The major sticking point was Texas wanting to launch The Longhorn Network. USC's president said "No way". Imagine how different things would have gone for the Pac-12, if they had Texas & OU as Conference Members the last 17 years.

Missouri & Texas A&M would not have moved to the SEC to get away from Texas. And the stability of the Big XII would not have been in question, so Colorado & Nebraska would have remained.

West Va would likely still have received its invite to the Big XII as one replacement for the Texas/OU departure to the west, while TCU would still have been called up to bat, as well.

The Big East would still have been raided, and we'd have a stronger Power5.

Instead, their are Dummies in the positions of Academia. And they let the Television Networks broker their value, rather than realizing the Sport had the leverage.

So, we have what we do.

I personally think that the train driving for 4 24 team conferences has already left the station.
