James Rogers out for season

Postby Dossenator » Tue Oct 12, 2010 12:14 pm

Just scrolled on ESPNU. Oregon State's James Rogers will miss the rest of the season due to injury. He was averaging 176 all-purpose yards a game.

That is really going to hurt Oregon State.

It will indeed. The report said he is applying for a medical redshirt....so maybe he will get to play next season. If they do not grant him one his college career is over.

James has had a really tough season. He was brutalized and suffered a concussion against Boise State and was sidelined for the Arizona State game as a consequence. Now a knee injury knocks him out for the remaider of the season? I hope he gets his waiver. He is a fine player with a great future.

The NCAA has gotten tougher on medical red-shirts...I have heard of many cases over the last few years I couldn't believe they rejected. I'd say if he played in 3 games or more his chances are slim. (They don't seem to consider if a guy went in a game for 3 minutes...or tried to play before the extent was fully known and things of this nature. I think their approach and stance could use some work in this area.)

Additionally you have to question the judgement of the coaching and medical staff. A concussion is a very serious injury (also known as TBI - Traumatic Brain Injury).

A common residual of a TBI is error in judgement in the thinking process. I don't know the details concerning his knee injury but perhaps there is a link to the consequence of that first injury. If he knows he should swerve instead of running in a straight line, for example, but runs straight anyway because his inhibitions a still dulled because of the concussion then it is reasonable to assume he will get hurt more. Personally I feel that all concussions that are diagnosed as such should sit out at least three games -- no exceptions. This boy's football career could be destroyed because he was possibly allowed to play before he was medically able with time to recover properly.

The coaching staff has nothing to do with medical decisions. Only the medical staff - something I would think coaches would support because they don't have to make the decision on whether or not a kid should play.

I respectfully disagree or he would not have been allowed to return to play after the Arizona State game. anyone who knows anything about TBI will tell you one week does not heal.

Terrible knee injury. The bad thing is it happened after he crossed the goal one...it was a clear TD and the defender tackled him in the endzone. They showed it yesterday on College Football Live on ESPN. This injury had nothing to do with a concussion.

The amount of helmets that are coming off of players this year is now being looked at, they are not waiting until the end of the season. The first report indicates they are coming off without much contact...the players just stops and the helmet keeps on going.

I thought maybe the helmets coming off was a result of something the players were doing. Maybe to get their face on TV. That is potentially the most dangerous occurrence on the football field. If it happens at the wrong time someone could be killed.

It does seem to be happening more frequently. You would think they could design a helmet that would not come off, unless it is a safety feature to prevent neck injuries from a twisting of the face mask.

I saw that play on the recap, there was no good reason for the defender to pull him down in the end zone after he clearly had scored.
