Oregon vs Oregon State: Civil War Game

Postby donovan » Mon Nov 29, 2010 8:39 pm

Just one person’s opinion. Like most rivalries, when it comes to the Civil War, Oregon State vs the University of Oregon, it is reasonable to believe that all the past statistics will prove to be irrelevant. Oregon State with its 5-6 (4-4 PAC 10) record is a much better team than it appears to be on paper. I have seen them in person only once this year and though they have been erratic in performance game to game, they have the goods to make this a real contest. This, like most games will be determined by the best defense. The 16 or so point spread is on paper and no one that has seen these two teams is going to believe that, whether is happens or not. Like most local crowds, bets are straight up.

Oregon this year has very good skill players and their offensive line is very discipline. This strategy of getting the ball off in 15 seconds or less has left defenses chasing their tails. What I have seen is Oregon sets up with in 5 or 6 seconds. shifts a couple of time and the ball is snapped at 14 or 15 seconds. The defense who never was set shifts with the offense and when the ball in put into play, Oregon just takes control of the play.

I think the key is for Oregon State to quickly set up their defense and to not shift. Go with what you defensively called. Stay set and when the snap happens make the adjustments. If not, I do not think there is any hope for them. Mike Riley is a good coach. He is disciplined and has taken firm stands with his players. No nonsense. I think he will have his team ready.

Oregon has scored with in one or two minutes of possession…Oregon is in last place in the PAC 10 in time of possession with 24.44 minutes per game. I think this is the key…to stopping them.

On defense, Oregon is good, not great, good at stopping the scoring. They cover well down field, but not so great against the run. That of course with Rodgers who is a little fireplug. Very hard to stop and has this sideways lateral move that happens in an instant. If Oregon State’s O line opens the holes…he will get through them.

Oregon, imo, is for real. Darron Thomas, the guy who replaced Massoli, is big time. Quick, accurate and reads the field as well as anyone. He is the spearhead of this quick set up and run offense.

My prediction: Oregon State has as much, in their minds to gain as Oregon. This rivalry is as intense as any in the Pac 10 The schools are only 45 miles apart. Will be a sell out of about 45,000 people. Oregon State will stop the Ducks offense and Oregon will not contain Rodgers. OSU 28, Oregon 21 Would I bet the mortgage…nope…will I be surprised if Uof O blows OSU out…no….if OSU blows Oregon out…yes…but in the end…I think OSU thinks they have more to gain, and that may make the difference.

Is it really correct to use the term "Civil War" in reference to two northwestern teams?

Kentucky-Tennessee...OK...West Virginia-VT...OK

But not Oregon vs Oregon State...It's really a fowl beaver match. The Annual Fowl Beaver Classic maybe? With maybe a queen to present at half time...the annual presentation of Little Mary Rottencrotch.

I agree. I think that This game could be real trouble for Oregon if Oregon State's defense can get them off the field. I haven't been "all in" with Oregon this year based on what I saw from them last year against a not great Ohio State team. I do give them credit for being better this year, but I think they could be flustered if the defense shuts down their first option making the new Qb make on his feet. Or they could brat Oregon State by 50.

This is one of my favorite rivalry games. There are six or seven good rivalry games I like to watch. The rivalries are what makes CFB great IMO and the PAC 10 is the only conference that seems to care as much about building their rivalries as they do the cash.

As I am sure you know there have been several civil wars all over the world. The Eastern North and South region of the United States have no trademark.

Spence your analysis is so good that I will bet the house on it! Of course, the bank owns most of it so they are involved also! I like OSU 34 Oregon 31
The preceding statements are solely the opinion of GoBoilers and are, therefore, probably not based whatsoever on fact, research or more time in thought than what was required to physically type them. They're probably correct anyway, so you shouldn't argue too much, because otherwise he'll just blather on forever. On the internet Al Gore invented.

Yeah I took a big leap. Donovan has a good feel for them and I believe Oregon is better - I just think that if Oregon State can take that first option away it will cause problems. Chip Kelly doesn't make good on field adjustments IMO.

"Civil" War is an oxymoron at best. I don't name them, just report...but I will take it up....and as for "fowl beaver" match...you can quickly imagine where that has gone before..and we won't go there.

Maybe we should just refer to it as the Domestic War ... then again; beavers and ducks aren't particularly domesticated animals .

Could name it the Feral War, or possibly the Northwestern Roadkill War.

Of course, we can't let the Mountaineer fans hear us talking about roadkill ... they'll show up with a rotisserie spicket & Tabasco sauce.

This game is heating up. For a very old rivalry, over a 100 years old, this is the most meaningful that I can remember. These teams have bounced each other out of Bowl games in this last games, several times. Tame by today's standards, the "riot" of 1910 shut down all athletic events for a couple of years. Oregon is a good team...I think the team that is pumped most on Saturday wins. Hard to tell how and why that happens.

This is a link to some description of the 1910 game.

If the team most pumped wins then Oregon is going to have problems. Oregon State has nothing to lose. In my personal experience the team with nothing to lose loves to ruin the team with everything to gain's season.

Yep, take a look at last nights game ( if you got to watch it ).

Arizona State is now 6-6 with their win over in state rival Arizona; though, due to AZ St's 5-6 record going into the game, with two of those wins being FCS teams, the SunDevils are still ineligible, and knew that going into last nights battle.

Arizona, on-the-other-hand, had everything to lose, as they were playing for a chance at a more prestigious bowl game.

It would have seemed as though the Wildcats really took over the game early in the second half. But Arizona St fought back, shifting the momentum at the right time. And, blocking an extra point at the end of the game to take it into overtime.

Then, blocked a second extra point in double OT, to win the game.

One team's desire to finish on a high note, made the other's a pitiful regular season end ( Arizona dropping their last 4 games in a row ).

I don't care how pumped up the Beavers are, they will not beat the Ducks.

It very well could happen; though , I agree , I do not think State is gonna stand a chance vs the Ducks.

Oregon is playing for their first ever National Championship appearance. To the kids there now, maybe that means little in regards to their own team's appearance.

I will say, the Civil War game has had many unexpected underdog victories since its inception. So, it could possibly happen, even if it is the most unlikely scenario.

I didn't think Nevada would come back from 20 + points , all in the second half; eventhough they did.

Oregon will probably blow State out ... however, the game hasn't happened yet; and that has rung so true many times this season.

i'm not ready to go against the Ducks, but I think there is a better then average change for the Beavers.
