Louisville Lucks out

Postby Swamp Daddy » Sat Sep 29, 2012 11:56 pm

In total monsoon conditions, UL lucks out on the fumble ratio and beats Southern Mississippi 21-17. Deep water puddles everywhere. Passing game was almost nil. PAT's didn't work, etc. But, in the end, a win is a win. We've had several terrible rain games with them over the years.

Southern Miss. put up a fight and led most of the game. A muffed punt by S.M. at their own 20 was recovered by Louisville who punched in a touchdown a few playes later. Still 5 minutes to go and the Southern Miss. offense finally came alive and even threw some passes in the slackening rain to drive down to the Louisville 20. In the slippery conditions UL sacked them back to the 29 bringing up 4th and 9. They tried a halfback pass back across the field to the QB (this play has been used against UL several times this year). The defense broke it up; and, two straight knees later UL had it's 5th win to go undefeated so far.

I'll take it as I wipe enough sweat off my face here at home to feel like I was there in the rain. My nerves are shaky.

I saw the near end of that game. Some people may be unimpressed with Louisville against a struggling Southern Miss team, but I'm willing to grant them a mulligan. In those conditions, it really could become anyone's game.

Yeah you can't gauge much of anything off of a sloppy game unless someone has good mudders...and few teams have a couple of well conditioned fullbacks they can run 25 plays. It often greatly benefits the weaker team as they can hang much more in a game.

I give the Cardinals props. I also enjoy snow and bad weather games in general; it ups the ante from a strategy standpoint.
