NFL Fantasy Football Advice

Postby Yeofoot » Thu Jul 19, 2007 4:31 pm

Peoples, I needs some help!

Last year I picked my team according to who was really good in college/Ex Texas players, and finished dead last. I could really use some advice. I'm in the same league as our company's CFO, so I really want to do well this year.

I've been doing fantasy football for the last 2 years on AOL Sports, and I've made the playoffs twice. One year, I lost in the game before the title game

I think you'll want to get Jon Kitna on your team. I know, the Lions suck, but he was one of the league's top passers last year and the Lions are always behind so he's forced to throw

I try to pick the best player available. But this year, I'm going to make it a priority to pick guys that are on teams that seem like they'll be on the playoff bubble near the end of the year (Jacksonville, Kansas City, Cincinnati, Carolina, Minnesota, San Francisco, etc.). The problem is once I get into the playoffs, setting my line up is a bit of a quagmire and I always seem to lose. This way, deciding who to start won't be an issue since they won't be on the bench in the final weeks of the year.

Hope that helps :? I'm no expert.

You also just have to get lucky with a couple of picks. In 2005, I got Carson Palmer in the 7th round or something? In 2006, I got Frank Gore in the latter parts of the draft.

Really, I build most of my team through free agency.

Play golf with him. Fantasy football isn't on the same level.

Here my list of Longhorns in the NFL...

Tell me which picks would be overly Homerish...

Heres my ranking of them, clearly if I have the opportunity to draft Peyton, I'm taking him, same thing with LT, but...

1. Cedric Benson RB
2. Vince Young QB
3. Chris Simms QB
4. Roy WIlliams, WR
5. Bo Scaife, TE (VY loves his TE)
5. Phil Dawson, K
6. For defense: Bears, Chiefs, Steelers, Chargers

Thoughts...

Also, is Priest Holmes going to play this year. He was soooo good before he got hurt.

Yeafoot, your first mistake is drafted any player who played for Texas.....

Just kidding...being a Razorback fan I had to say it.

Being serious now picking a good team is tricky. I have come in 2nd place a few times. My problem is that teams that have all ready clinched a playoff spot begin to rest their players late in the season. That cost me 1st place more then once. It is nice to have the LT's, Mannings, Alexander, on your team but you can't count on them at the end. I try to have to do what Eric is going to do this year. After the first 3 picks (I go after whatever stud is out there....and the truth is everyone gets good players early on) I try to pick good players on teams that will still be fighting for a playoff spot until the very end of the season. That means your good players will not be benched late in the year because their team is all ready in the playoffs. I always try to go Running back heavy. Pick up at least 2 more backs then you need. Of course it all depends on how many bench spots you get. Last year I was in a league that started 2 RB's, and had a spot for 1 WR/RB....I had 3 bench spots. I had 5 RB's on my team. It has been my experience that the teams with more depth at Runningback seem to win....and in the past few years the team that has Ladanian Tomlinson wins. I usually pick Running back with my first 3 picks, then QB, then WR, then defense, then QB 2, WR 2 or TE, defense 2, then kicker (right before anyone else....if you make a good selection here it will make a big difference), then whoever the best players are on the board (good spot to pick up a couple more RB's or a 3rd WR).

Also, don't be afraid to make a lot of moves. I make tons of moves. Every year there are several players who are undrafted that become huge stars....usually at the RB position. Don't be afraid to drop one of the RB on your roster that is not performing...even if he has a name to pick up someone who is performing. Last year I dropped a star running back and pick up M. Jones Drew (Jacksonville Jaguar RB)....man he was awesome for me as a #2 or #3 back.

Hopefully I did not ramble too much and made a little bit of sense. Take it with a grain of salt....I have never won a football league, but I have come in 2nd several times. I am hoping this will be the year.

Good Luck.

Thanks Doss, that was a lot of good advice. One of the reasons I did so poorly last year was picking quarterbacks the first two rounds. Whoops.

If you can, pick up Plaxico Burress. I have him and he scored 32 points for me. I know, you might think he's overrated and this was a one time thing. However, being one of Eli's main targets, he'll probably get plenty of balls thrown his way, especially on the deep ball like we saw on the second play of week 1. So, if available, you should definitely get him.
