Florida International: Brutal

As bad as last week's meltdown against Bethune-Cookman was, Florida International basically threw the towel in on the season. Ron Turner, who was hired in Mario Cristobal's stead, just asked for a running clock. In. A. Division I. NCAA. Football. Game. A running clock. That is peewee-material. Not only that, but the final score was 72-0 and FIU had 30 yards of total offense. I'd love to know what the all-time record low for total offense in an FBS game is, that has to approach it. Even acknowledging the sack yardage doesn't do them any favors which would only put them at 60 yards of offense.

Did FIU loose all players from last year? UL threw in some 2nd and 3rd string by the end but other than locals seeing new faces the wipe out continued.

I think they did lose a lot of guys, had some guys injured, and had some suspensions. Most of all the blame falls on Ron Turner who is much lesser of a head man than Mario Cristobal. FIU made a really stupid move when they did that.

Well, it's not a running clock, but, they declared the 4th quarter as high school football rules for the Miami Savannah St game . . . a 12 minute 4th quarter.

Savannah State's head coach said he wouldn't take a running clock, because he wanted to teach his players to toughen up; to play no matter what.

The score is currently 77-7 . . . Miami just got an interception, and is moving forward.

The `Canes have been grinding it out since the beginning of the 3rd quarter . . . our 2cnd & 3rd string players have been rotating back and forth since the mid 2cnd quarter.

No respectable FBS school should ever schedule Savannah State. They are 1-10 each of last 3 years in FCS. 269 wins in 97 seasons. Scored 387 points in last 33 games in which they were held to single digits 18 times and shutout and a field goal or less 8 times . Game is over before starters get in 10 minutes of play. Subs don't get any real work because the competition is nonexistent.

Same goes for Nicholls State - how they beat Western Michigan I will never understand. Nicholls just played a NAIA team and only won 42-22. Was 1-10 each of last 2 years with both wins over Evangel (MO), a NAIA school. 183 wins in 41 seasons. Wow! That has to be a sports oddity. A football team with 0 wins vs. FCS schools, but 1 win vs. FBS school in last 2+ years.

Same goes for Nicholls State - how they beat Western Michigan I will never understand. Nicholls just played a NAIA team and only won 42-22. A football team with 0 wins vs. FCS schools, but 1 win vs. FBS school in last 2+ years.

I watched most of the 4th quarter of that game expecting Nicholls to choke. The fact that Western lost is an absolute embarrassment. Evangel, as you said, is an NAIA bible college and that's the only team they've beaten in recent memory other than Langston last week (of course after the WMU win they lost to UL Lafayette 70-7). Not only that, but Nicholls State was reduced to their third string quarterback midway through the game. I'm not even hesitating to call that the worst defeat by a legit FBS team that I've ever seen. FIU's 20 point loss to Bethune-Cookman is in the same class, but Bethune-Cookman will probably win the MEAC and get in the FCS postseason. Nicholls State may not win another game in the Southland Conference.

I'm not sure how good Lamar is and I don't know how Arkansas Tech has been doing in Division II recently, but I would assume Arkansas Tech can win that game.

Say what you want about Bill Cubit, but he would never have lost to Nicholls State. I think P.J. Fleck can get this team going in the right direction, but this year is an absolute disaster with no hope of things getting better immediately. Nobody saw WMU being this bad, but I remember reading that College Football News was all over Fleck and WMU's roster like they would compete with Northern Illinois and Toledo for the MAC championship, which I thought was way off the mark at the time.

I heard today on a local talk site that they (FIU) lost 31 (seniors and suspensions) or more; the coach is 'cleaning' up the sport. Sounds as if the new coach is Kragthorping them. We went through that here for sure...Downhill for 3 years wiping out 6 years of going uphill.

Just when you think things couldn't get worse for Southern Miss, they lose to these guys. Southern Miss has more talent than FIU, but it just goes to show you how losing can become a culture in a locker room. This was a team that was 12-2 in 2011 and, while obviously there is roster turnover in college football, it's not like the cupboards were bare.

The losing streak at the once-proud program is now at 17
