I actually agree with this in many respects.

See, well ya see, the thing is, he should have caught that ball. But the ball is bigger than his hands.

I don't disagree either, but I don't get it. Want to go to the Circus or watch it on TV. Ever been to a PGA tour match, as good as golf is on TV. Baseball on TV pales compared to being in the stands. Don't go to church, just watch it on TV. We are a non participatory people, standing on the sidelines watching others. Drives me nuts. We're all going to Hell.

Maybe what we have is hell because we didn't pay attention to god. Could that be what Nietzsche meant when he said, "God is dead" in Thus Spake Zarathustra? Perhaps it's not too late and Ahuramadza is still waiting, patiently...

Or Churchhill who said, "If you are going through Hell, keep going." Mostlikely my mother who said, "Don't touch the stove, you will get burned, don't play ball in the house, you will break a lamp and get spanked and there is a God." I touched the stove and got burned, played ball in the house, broke the lamp and got spankied and at that point, I believed.

Re: Opinions?
HD TV is not the factor for declining attendance. Maybe having so many games being televised, is a factor.
But other factors and more likely to reduce the attendance is the rising costs involved in going to games. Ticket costs, season tickets requiring donations per seat, parking costs, not to mention all the other game day expenses.
You factor that into the current economic condition of the country, with the high unemployment, people being taken from full time to part time work.
Many of these same things have contributed to also the decline in golf and I am sure many other recreational activities.
High Def TV is not the culprit.

I tend not to be very trustworthy of these sociological explanations that boil it down to one thing in particular. There is always a giant melting pot of reasons why this or that or the other thing is or isn't happening. I think the author, RazorHawk, and Donovan are all right, the only difference being degree, which I wouldn't pretend to know
The reason I don't go to as many games is because I'm a fan of college football in general even though I love my teams. And between travel back and forth and gametime, you're talking about five and a half hours out of a Saturday for me. And Saturdays are my holidays
. Somebody offered me tickets to the Illinois/Michigan game and I declined because it was 45 degrees and pouring rain. It would be a chore at that point.

Old Ducker needs to get a new reading list...I think the Ducks are exciting football...people go to see well executed games....there is more than the score.

Re: Opinions?
Heading away from my recliner tomorrow for the Arkansas vs Florida game in Gainesville. Going with my BIL and this is only his second college game ever (1st was at Northwestern playing Iowa).
We will be making a full day, as we want to watch the Iowa vs Michigan St game at Noon. Heading to Gainesville early and to a sports bar to watch that game, then tailgating during the 3:30 games, and making our way to our seats for a 7PM kickoff. I probably won't get home until 2 AM.
I may be too old for this, but this may replace the heart stress test that I am supposed to have in December. I will consult with my cardiologist.

My colleague at work is a Gator. Office "team building" requires that I root for them. Sorry.
