I think it mostly comes from being either the biggest or second biggest school forever (along with Texas) Then Ohio was a large state with really only one major team. Texas is a lot bigger, but they have more teams as well. The alumi base is huge too because they graduate 7 tp 10 thousand a year. Couple that with the fact that Ohio State has been consisntently ranked among the best teams for the better part of seven decades.
As far as May and Holtz goes, it is a giant act.
