Working Out Right...BG vs NIU

Postby billybud » Fri Dec 06, 2013 10:54 pm

Ole BB is on his usual hobby horse....

Cheering that there might not be a BCS Buster and have a match up like NIU vs OK State in the Fiesta.....

I guess that would put UCF in the Fiesta?

I would have picked BG over NIU. They may well do it. And I think Utah State will beat Fresno which will really devalue that run. I hope BG wins..because I have them in Cane's Bolshevik Fantasy League.

To me, this is like cheering against Florida Gulf Coast in the NCAA tournament. I don't care if there might be a mismatch along the way, but usually America cheers for the Cinderella. This applies for anything and everything except collegiate football, for some reason. Even if you think they bump a "deserving" team out of the picture, that "deserving" team would likely get matched up in another bowl game of importance, kind of like LSU and Clemson in the Chick-fil-a.

I can't say I was enthusiastically cheering for NIU, but Bowling Green did cost the MAC $8 million tonight and a fifth team in the bowl picture. The MAC has an alternate tie-in with the Poinsettia and they will surely fill that for a fourth bid, but they were on track for a fifth bid. Now I would guess the Sun Belt probably slides in somewhere for a third bid.

I was thinking that, regardless of the outcome of this game, why would the Orange Bowl pass up on Oregon for Clemson? I know Clemson would likely travel better, but it's not like their fan base is jacked up coming off of what I believe is their fifth defeat in a row against South Carolina. America has been waiting for an Oregon/Bama matchup for the last five years and this is the biggest chance to get it. I haven't seen any serious bowl projectors put these teams in the Orange so maybe it doesn't have a lot of traction, but just going off of my armchair prognostication, that would seem to be the most attractive matchup available.

I think that the Orange might pass on Clemson...Bama will be a prize to go somewhere...and they would kill Clemson.
