Eric's 90% Inaccurate Bowl Projections - Week 15

Postby Eric » Sun Dec 08, 2013 4:35 am

Well, we'll see how many of these I get wrong after reading various news outlets regarding which teams the bowls are interested in AND having all of the regular season games being played  . Some of these are already set, hence 90% inaccurate instead of 100% :D

New Mexico: Boise State vs. Arizona
Las Vegas: Fresno State vs. USC
Idaho Potato: Toledo vs. San Jose State
New Orleans: UL Lafayette vs. Tulane
Beef O’Brady’s: Middle Tennessee vs. Buffalo*
Hawaii: Colorado State vs. ECU
Little Caesar’s Pizza: Ball State vs. Pitt*
Poinsettia: Northern Illinois vs. Utah State
Military: Syracuse vs. Marshall
Texas: Washington State* vs. Minnesota
Kraft Fight Hunger: Washington vs. BYU
Buffalo Wild Wings: Nebraska vs. Texas Tech
Pinstripe: Rutgers vs. Notre Dame*
Belk: Cincinnati vs. North Carolina
Russell Athletic: Louisville vs. Miami
Armed Forces: San Diego State vs. Navy
Music City: Boston College vs. Ole Miss
Alamo: Oregon vs. Texas
Holiday: Arizona State vs. Kansas State
Sun: Virginia Tech vs. UCLA
Independence: Georgia Tech vs. Western Kentucky*
Liberty: Rice vs. Vanderbilt
Chick-fil-A: Duke vs. Texas A&M
Gator: Michigan vs. Georgia
Capital One: South Carolina vs. Wisconsin
Outback: LSU vs. Iowa
Heart of Dallas: North Texas vs. Maryland*
Rose: Stanford vs. Michigan State
Sugar: Alabama vs. Oklahoma
Fiesta: Baylor vs. UCF
Orange: Clemson vs. Ohio State
Cotton: Oklahoma State vs. Missouri
BBVA Compass: Mississippi State vs. Houston
GoDaddy: Bowling Green vs. Arkansas State
BCS Championship: Auburn vs. Florida State

It's sounding more and more like UNLV will get the shaft. The current athletic director at San Jose State, as far as I know, has some kind of tie with the folks who run the Potato Bowl. Sounds like SJSU will get the nod there and then UNLV probably won't be attractive enough for the other bowls to get in. I think it's a giant punch in the gut to that school that after toiling for so long, they'll get left out of the picture for a team like San Diego State who they just obliterated. They could still get in, but if SJSU gets the Potato Bowl, then it might come down to San Diego State and UNLV for that final bid. The MWC picture is still in a bit of flux though.

I heard a rumor that the Poinsettia was the destination for Northern Illinois if they had lost the championship game to Bowling Green. The Poinsettia sounded like they wanted Utah State for a while as well. It also sounds that Oregon State's fan base might be perceived to be too dejected to travel well, so I left them out of the at-large picture and put Western Kentucky. This might be a mild upset, but you would have to figure that Washington State is ahead of Oregon State on the at-large totem pole. WKU would do a better job of showing up to Shreveport than Oregon State.

Since Marshall is already in the Military Bowl, the Military may take a team that would have to travel somewhat farther so they get some out-of-town presence in the local economy. Maryland would be the homer choice, but Syracuse would show up without issue. The Terps could easily wind up here though.

As for the BCS, I still think Oregon is a player for the Sugar Bowl or perhaps even the Fiesta Bowl. The Sugar could surprise us all and take UCF, I still think. That being said, America wants Oregon/Bama and I think the Sugar Bowl would be making a mistake to pass up on that opportunity. If they went with pitting the underdog against Alabama, the Fiesta would definitely take Oregon to play Baylor. I can't attest to its likelihood, but that would be my favorite scenario by a mile. Clemson might also be more on the bubble than these prognosticators assume.

Texas A&M vs Duke would be a disaster for the Dukies.....

Yeah I don't know which A&M team would show up....They seem to have a void of leadership in the locker room and a quitter's attitude. Wouldn't be surprising for them to mail that game in. Duke can score on your defense if it's pretty bad, and A&M does have a bad defense.

I guess Toledo and San Jose State are just about officially done for the postseason. The Idaho Bowl went with Buffalo and San Diego State, which is a really weird pairing. What's the estimated turnout there, maybe a few thousand?

Ohio is going to get the last MAC bid to the Beef O'Brady's Bowl against ECU. Bowling Green is going to the LC Pizza Bowl probably to play Pitt, which sends Ball State to Mobile to play Arkansas State. Middle Tennessee is going to the Armed Forces and the MWC will send UNLV to the Heart of Dallas. Oregon State likely to play Boise in the Hawaii Bowl.

And speaking of A&M, I read a rumor on Twitter that makes it sound like Michigan and A&M in the Outback Bowl is a possibility. Jerry Palm has LSU playing Michigan in the Gator Bowl. I'm not sure either of those are right.

I guess the almost-official reports are saying Iowa/LSU in Outback and A&M/Duke in Chick-fil-a.

If Boise State plays Oregon State in Hawaii...then they both win.

And that is precisely the "look back into history" angle espn will repetitively (redundantly) indulge us with all the way to kickoff.

Who knows ... maybe Meyer will feel the spirit of ol' Woody in his hands, and choke Sammy Watkins after a big run.

And then you should take the Mrs on Vacation . . .

Then tell her, you want to sight see @ a historical location.

Been to Hawaii once...many, many years ago. Never saw the place since I was only at the field in transit....

I would love to see Maui or Hawaiii...

Been to the Hawaiian islands three times. Twice incorporated a Hawkeye and Razorback football game. Love the Hawaiian islands, except for the long airplane ride.

So the Sugar Bowl is Bama/Oklahoma. I honestly don't know anybody can really be interested in this game. This is just a name-brand game. I would say with Oklahoma being one-dimensional offensively, this is a complete mismatch. I like Alabama by 20+. The only question about this game is whether or not Alabama is geared up enough to be in this bowl game and I think Saban should whip them into shape.

I think you should have a winning record to go bowling.
