UMass Brain Cramp

Postby Eric » Sat Oct 04, 2014 6:32 pm

So I've been checking the box scores and didn't catch most of the UMass/Miami game, but Miami comes all the way back from halftime down 27 for a 42-41 lead, so I tune in. UMass converts some downfield throws, one of which goes for about 40 yards and puts them at the five yard line with three seconds left, plenty of time for a spike. But the QB takes the snap and throws it to the sidelines inexplicably and he gets forced out of bounds at about the 2. They passed up a chip shot field goal for an all-or-nothing throw to the sidelines. I just cannot believe you would not make the proper call in that situation. I don't know if it was the coaching staff or the QB Frohnapfel (who is inexperienced as a QB), but regardless, I have no idea how you run a play right there.

Wow! That is incredibly stupid!

I sometimes don't get the coaching decisions...

Take Dabo's against FSU. it's overtime, Clemson faces 4th and one on the 16. Rather than kick the FG and take the three point lead, Dabo goes for the first. Is stuffed.

Now....FSU's kicker is as automatic as one can get. He had already kicked a 52 yard and 42 yard field goal among his four FG's in the game (and has only missed one in his career). The odds of FSU scoring at least a FG were really good.

Ultimately, FSU did not need to kick that FG...they ran the ball into the end zone. And ultimately, Dabo's decision turned out to be the right one. But I think that I would have taken the three points and tried to stop FSU.

It worked out, but it wasn't the right decision. Unless he had no confidence in his defense's ability to stop FSU. Then it was the right decision.

That situation for Clemson has points of analysis that lend merit. The UMass decision makes no sense at all.
