Wazzu Does the Most Wazzu Thing Possible

Postby Eric » Sun Oct 05, 2014 2:57 am

Connor Halliday broke David Klingler's long-held passing record by chucking the ball for 734 yards.....And Washington State lost. Do you know how Washington State lost? Well, Cal scored too early and gave Wazzu 3.5 minutes to march down the field. It's not like Cal had a prayer of stopping Wazzu all day, as the score at that point was 60-59 and Wazzu finished the game with 812 yards of offense. Anyway, Wazzu is marching down the field, and as a defense, you might be tempted to let Washington State score the closer they got to the end zone. I'm not one to intentionally give a lead away, but honestly, the way Cal's offense was playing, I'd rather have the football and a minute on the clock than hoping my defense can keep these guys from kicking a field goal, while it's more than likely they'd just waltz into the endzone.

Cal keeps making tackles inside the 15 yard line and Wazzu is chewing clock. They eventually get to the two yard line and Cal stuffs Washington State at the one, with the RB reaching for the white line of the endzone by stretching the ball out. He actually scored, but there wasn't any review and he was called down. Wazzu had one timeout and didn't want to blow a challenge, so they ran another play and got stuffed. I'm sitting here thinking Cal should have let Wazzu score with a minute left as there is now 15 seconds left in the game. Wazzu botches the field goal snap on 3rd and goal from the 1 and the kicker kicks it straight from the hash, missing the field goal.

I like Mike Leach a lot and the fact that he has gotten Washington State this competitive this fast is pretty impressive. But on the same token, at some point you have to coach a little bit of defense and your team has to become more mentally tough. There is no way a scholarship kicker in a power five conference should miss that, even if the snap was a little awkward. It's just another instance in a long line of Washington State mental collapses.

In Miami, it used to be known as "Wide Right!" 8)

Yeah ain't it funny how that goes?

How FSU has become "Kicker U".

Five Groza awards since those wide rights....and maybe a 6th this year. Aguayo, in his two year career, is perfect on PAT's and has only missed one field goal.
