Maybe there was something between Sonny Cumbie and Kliff Kingsbury. TCU was running the ball at the end, but Boykin was still chucking it around late up by 30+.
Speaking of Cumbie, I think he would be an awesome fit at UTEP as a head coach if they wind up not liking Kugler, although UTEP has managed to win a few games lately. If I'm Troy or Buffalo (two teams with openings already), I'd be ringing his phone off the hook. He would be a star at Troy.

This is really what is frustrating about Michigan's situation (if I'm allowed to derail the thread). There is absolutely no excuse in modern college football to field an absolutely terrible offense. Mediocre or middling? Sure. But struggling just to score a single touchdown? Inexcusable.
The terrible offenses are the ones that try to run a pro style offense without the horses. These teams such as Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Michigan, Penn State, UConn, Kansas, Ohio, Central Michigan, Vanderbilt, Hawaii, USF, and Syracuse (notice a theme here?) think they are too good for "gimmick" offenses while Sonny Dykes fields a dynamic offense at Cal with a true freshman QB in his first year (they are a lot better this year, and even though they almost went winless in his first season, they could at least score and give themselves an interesting chance). Sonny Cumbie at TCU? Wham! He turns a spread option QB in Trevone Boykin into the second coming of, well, Sonny Cumbie. Washington State is terrible for three years and their hire Mike Leach? Wham! Yes they're terrible, but now they have an identity and can score, and they went to a bowl game in his second season. Do people remember how awful Wazzu was with Paul Wulff? They were the worst P5 team in the country for three consecutive years and Leach made them competitive overnight. June Jones goes to Hawaii after a winless season and turns them around in no time and does the same for SMU, even though the first and last years of his era were pretty brutal. Service academies are competitive beyond their means based on scheme and want-to alone. Navy, Army, and Air Force have the physical makeup of FCS teams but they can play with teams way above their paygrade because of the triple option and the headaches it creates.
Of course coaching up your team on the fundamentals and not turning the ball over are huge and no "system" can make up for that. Bad players are going to make bad plays no matter what your scheme is, but when you can have Insta-Offense (just add water!), there's no excuse not to use it if the other option is playing like Michigan's constipated offense. My signature says it all; Michigan has 9 trips in the red zone against 6 Power 5 teams. That is absolutely insane. I can still count the offensive touchdowns they have scored on my two hands in those games. How many touchdowns did TCU have today? Texas Tech is pretty awful on defense, but what could Michigan's klutzy offense do against Tech? Score 24 points?
The downside of course is that you wear your defense out, but as inept as Michigan's offense is, their defense gets tired anyway because they get no help. So I'd rather hire Tony Franklin or Sonny Cumbie to run this offense and try to score 40 points than I would watch them play for four yards at a time, missing blocks, turning the ball over, and seeing their wide receivers get absolutely no separation while Devin Gardner makes constant mistakes. Yes, Michigan has the worst turnover margin in the country, but if you take all of their turnovers away, their offense would only be statistically marginally better because their offense would stall at some point anyway down the field since they have no home run ability like just about every good team in the country has. They have about as many explosive playmakers as Eastern Michigan and their fundamentals are just as bad.

It appears that Michigan needs a total revamping....
....particularly the offense, as you state. Changing the offensive scheme can lead to a bumpy period until the right athletes are procured to operate the scheme. We have seen that at WVU with Holgerson's offense.

Michigan's big problem is that twice in the last few years they have completely changed their offense with the wrong personel in place to run it. It is like having Jim brown in the backfield and running the run and shoot.
