When you start looking at the rankings by the way they are counted by media personalities, you will see that, teams categorized by numbers will often have many multiple positions.

By examining closer the category you chose, we see that saying a team from the west, getting flagged, in the article you present, which makes a case for UCLA, we also see Virginia Tech with 1 more penalty, and North Carolina having been penalized as often as the Bruins as well as Washington State --- turns out Oregon has been flagged the same amount of times as Virginia Tech.

East Carolina and Florida International have the same amount as Washington.

Miami, with 81 penalties, has only been flagged 1 time less than Colorado, 2 times less than Washington, 4 less penalties than Washington State & UCLA, and a whopping 5 less flags have been thrown at the Hurricanes than Oregon after 11 games --- that's 4 teams ranked higher in penalties called against them than Miami, all within 5 flags.

Yeah, there's a huge difference --- call the FBI, positions of statistics are a matter of sanctity --- never mind the numbers behind those rankings are often misleading.

You did not cite a conference, rather a coastal divide --- then again, you did source your reference from a west coast news paper.

You are correct and I am really good with the coastal divide concept..as for citing a West Coast paper......Other than the Christian Science Monitor...not sure I recognize any East Coast papers....in volumine libri non grata

The question is, are some conferences more strict, or flag prone, than others? I don't know. Individual teams it could be the team or the refs. I would think on individual teams it is mostly the team. Different officials do not indicate a real common denominator.

I do believe, that officiating in football has taken away a lot of viewer excitement. Make a call, get on with the game. I personally am good with the call, some good, some bad.

Referees do what the conferences tell them to do so there is difference. Holding can be called on every play. That has always been true. My problem with holding is that I believe if your hands are under the pads in front of the defender, then it isn't holding. When a guys jersey is stretched half way across the field or the defender gets tackled, then you have to call that. There could be a standard that is league wide, but they don't care to have one.

They’re either going to run the ball here or their going to pass it.

The fewer rules a coach has, the fewer rules there are for players to break.

See, well ya see, the thing is, he should have caught that ball. But the ball is bigger than his hands.
