I realize second-guessing is 20/20, but San Diego State was up by 2 points with the ball on Navy's 15. It's 4th and 5 with 8:30 left in the game and San Diego State decides to...Go for it? What? Is this real life? What planet am I living on? Rocky Long is paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to be the head coach of a division one collegiate football program? Maybe I'm bad at math, but San Diego State stuffed Navy almost the entire game and a field goal puts them up 5, which forces Navy's hand to go the distance, instead of a field goal deficit which forces Navy to get to the 30 yard line with a chance to win the game. And, if you were worried about Navy eventually scoring a TD with four downs, you're talking about a one point deficit which would force them to go for the two points. So, in this scenario, the best-case is that you are down 20-19 and a FG wins. Worst-case, you're down 22-19 and a FG ties.
Navy of course settled for a FG eventually after field position was flipped on a fumble, so you can't predict this stuff, but in this type of game, you take the points at any cost. Plus Quinn Kahler played the second half of the season injured so he can't throw the ball effectively, so why are you forcing him to make a throw in that situation when you can avoid it. Terrible. Rocky Long's bowl record takes another hit, and so does my terrible picking skills (I picked Buffalo last year because Long was 1-6; I was wrong. I ditch that theory this year, Long loses, drops to 2-7 all-time in bowls)

On an irrelevant side note, I just have to vent here: I'm only 4-4 which could be worse, but three of those wins were heavy favorites. In "true tossup" games, I'm 1-4. You would imagine that flipping a coin over time would approach 50% heads, but it isn't so with my bowl picking skills.

. These three games have come down to a busted coverage on a 75-yard touchdown with under two minutes of gametime, a last-minute comeback touchdown / 55-yard OT FG / INT on first play of OT, and a bizarre, needless gamble combined with a kicker not quite hitting a football at the appropriate angle

Bowl season, how I love and loathe you
