I'm Going to Beat a Dead Horse....

Postby Eric » Tue Jan 06, 2015 10:34 pm

ESPN's marketing campaign of the playoff is pretty ludicrous. There is a flash ad that keeps playing on sites I visit that advertise for the national championship game. In the ad, they have all of these logos from all of the teams that compose Division 1 and they leave the screen as Ohio State and Oregon are left standing. I'm pretty sure I saw Grambling's, San Diego's, and Dartmouth's logos in the ads.

I don't know why they included those teams in the ad, but the main part I wanted to talk about was ESPN.com's weekly article where they start the season with all 129 teams having "a shot" at the playoffs and as each week happens, they axe teams from the potential playoff field until we're only left with a handful. They basically want to paint this as March Madness, although March Madness has 64 teams from the second round, so I think if you cube college football's hand-selected playoff field, you would get the equivalent number of participants. Apparently Old Dominion, Florida International, Kent State, Appalachian State, and New Mexico can make it if they take care of business, regardless of the fact that Marshall couldn't even get ranked ahead of Boise State for the Group of Five bid while they were undefeated, but I digress. Regardless of the narrative, this isn't March Madness and not every team has an equal shot from opening kickoff. At least be honest about it....

I'm an Ohio State fan and I'm getting sick of all the coverage. Asking Cardale Jones if he is coming back next year. Give me a break. The kid has played well, but no one is going to draft him based on 3 starts, even if he wins.

Transferring might be a possibility. I don't know how Meyer will handle having the QB who won the national title be his third-stringer. I think Braxton Miller will leave and Barrett will be back as the starter, Jones the backup. But my crystal ball is notoriously hazy

I think what's funny also is the national mentality of the whole thing. Meyer has to be worried if Miller transfers to a place like Florida or Florida State or Texas, something like that. Because if he's wildly successful, there's a chance you meet up with them in the playoffs at some point. With the BCS, it's a little more limited.

If Braxton is healthy and can throw, he will probably be the starter unless he just wants to leave. If his shoulder is not good enough to make the throws he needs to make then he probably stays as an H back or running back. How would you like Barrett and Miller in the backfield? Cardale is probably the odd man out. He could transfer, but he probably won't. He is a Glenville kid who took the Buckeyes to a national championship game. When he is done at Ohio State, he will get his shot at the NFL and if that doesn't work out, he will be set up in his own business. Insurance co, car lot, something like that. He will come back and be OK.

Transferring is not, or at least has not, been that easy, without sitting out a year. Just because you don't get playing time is generally not a reason.

Miller graduated during Winter graduation so he doesn't have to sit out if he Transfers. Jones would have to sit out.

Plus as a redshirt sophomore, if Jones transferred to an FBS team, he would probably only get one year, his senior season. If he dropped down to FCS, he could play for two years. I think if Jones leaves, he would go the FCS route.

And on another note, Jeff Driskel of Florida infamy is transferring to Louisiana Tech. That will be interesting to see. I don't think he can find his mojo there, he just seems to be a very average QB despite the expectations for him coming out of high school. We'll see. Cody Sokol transferred in from Iowa and had a couple big passing games though and I'd probably believe that Driskel is better than Sokol.

I didn't catch every game this season by any means. But to me the playoff beat coverage of everything else. I mean am I wrong in saying there was less talk about the Heisman, there was less talk about coaches on the hot seat, etc.

I was all for this playoff thing, but teams in the top 4-6 spots dropping like they did and switching positions made me a little curious. I am not an NFL guy, but the college football playoff seems to have more coverage than the Super Bowls in the past.

It is the first one so it is going to get a good amount of coverage.

It's being made out to be a huge title fight. I admit I'm excited. Most people here have been college football fans for years (20+ here) and finally we have a playoff. I'm juiced for that.

Mano y Mano!

One king to rule them all.

This is not surprising. If you own ESPN Disney ABC and a bunch of other channels.....you are going to toot your product. Other channels have to talk about it because it is an elephant in their room....
