You might be wondering what my take on Michigan football is after talking them down for the last decade. Well, I have to say that this season has finally been a success in the mold of what I want to see them do. You can't really contend for playoffs every season, so any time you are 10-1 you will take it. My analysis from last year about this season being a disaster depended on Michigan being forced to play Wilton Speight or Brandon Peters or Dylan McCaffery, but Shea Patterson has added a real element to this offense that was missing for the last two years. It also depended on the continued improvement of the B1G, which undoubtedly hit a snag this year: Penn State is not 2016 or 2017 Penn State, Maryland had their enormous off-field issues, Nebraska sputtered out of the gate (but Frost will eject the bad apples and flush out the system quickly), Wisconsin's QB issues have finally caught up to them, and MSU's offense has reached critical mass of suckiness. But, I like where the running game is at. Blocking has been upgraded from last year. Defense is great as always, #1 statistically in the nation.
BUT....But....I will say that the job won't be done if they lost to the Buckeyes next week. I'll take a Buckeye win and a loss to Northwestern the following week, I honestly don't care about that game because this team has -100% chance of beating Alabama or Clemson, so wasting our time and energy like that isn't necessary. But the entire point of hiring Harbaugh was to re-establish national relevency and then to win championships, of any variety. And winning the B1G East, the division you co-inhabit with Ohio State, would be amazing. But this would still bump his overall record to 1-3 vs. Ohio State, 2-2 vs. Michigan State, 0-1 vs. Notre Dame, and assuming a playoff loss, 1-3 in bowl games. So we have a lot of work to do to dig us out of this hole and the only way to get it done is to win next week.
So Ohio State looks like garbage right now right? Despite their 10-1 record, they are skating by teams and their linebacker and defensive back play is appalling. Doesn't matter. They will flip the switch when they get Michigan. Some of this stuff is systemic so the problems won't totally go away. Their LBs won't magically turn into AJ Hawks on a dime, but they will play competently. The offense can still throw the football and their running style is something that Michigan has struggled with in the past.
So here's what happens, and Spence will be happy: Ohio State takes an early 7-0 lead. Michigan calms down, goes on a run, shuts their offense down, it's something like 17-7 at the half. Michigan gets up, let's say, 20-7 late 3rd quarter. Then the chokejob begins. Ohio State hits a bomb pass over the top. Turnover. Slant to KJ Hill / Paris Campbell. 21-20. Stop. Touchdown. 28-20. FG. 28-23. Run the clock out. Game over.
BUCKEYES WIN!!!!!!!!..............AGAIN!!!!!!!!
